- 1. Moves Like Jagger Tom Carnegie
2. Goodwins Codes and Conventions of a music video
- 1. Music videos demonstrate genre characteristics. (e.g. stage
performance in metal videos, dance routine for boy/girl band,
aspiration in Hip Hop).2. There is a relationship between lyrics
and visuals. The lyrics are represented with images. (either
illustrative, amplifying, contradicting).3. There is a relationship
between music and visuals. The tone and atmosphere of the visual
reflects that of the music. (either illustrative, amplifying,
contradicting).4. The demands of the record label will include the
need for lots of close ups of the artist and the artist may develop
motifs which recur across their work (a visual style).5. There is
frequently reference to notion of looking (screens within screens,
mirrors, stages, etc) and particularly voyeuristic treatment of the
female body.
- 6. There are often intertextual reference (to films, tv
programmes, other music videos etc).
3. Demonstrate Genre Characteristics
- The Genre of this song is Pop/Rock which is represented by the
standard band set up which is included in the video.
- The use of people dancing is often used in this genre and even
though there is no real dance routine they are all doing similar
moves and trying to imitate the moves used by Jagger.
- In the video they are paying tribute to Mick Jagger by trying
to make it as similar to a stage performance that he would have
with The Rolling Stones
4. Relationship between lyrics and visual (Images)
- The Video starts with The preparation of the scene in which the
video is filmed which goes with the song building up
- The name of the song Moves like Jagger is repeated throughout
and we are reminded of this by the amount of references to him
used.
- As the piece ends we see Mick Jagger bowing which is
representative of the song ending.
5. Relationship between lyrics and visual (Tone of Video)
- The video is trying to emulate video footage filmed in the 60s
with a grainy texture.
- The audio of the song is upbeat and the fast cuts between shots
represent this
- When someone new come on screen that is important (e.g.
singers) their name is written in extravagant florescent writing in
order for everyone to know who that person is and what their role
is in the song.
6. Close ups of artist
- There are constant close ups of Adam Levine in order to show
that he is the lead singer of the band and he is the face of
them.
- The rest of the band also feature in the video playing their
instruments
- When instruments start playing they show their entry for
example bass drum and guitars at beginning
7. Frequent reference to the nation of looking
- There is a lot of voyeuristic treatment of the female body in
the video with shots of women posing before the camera and shots
tilting in the same way you would look at someone.
- The women used in the video are also dancing in the same way to
make them not have an individual personality.
- There are a lot of close up shots of Christina Aguilera which
are used to show us how she is important at whilst she's
singing.
8. Inter-textual Reference
- Throughout the video Mick Jagger features from previously
recorded footage which they have used.
- There is also many girls dressed up in 60s clothes
- All the people that are dancing on stage are trying to imitate
him
- The British flag behind them is because Mick Jagger used to
always walk on stage with a British flag.
