Habitat Optimization Model for Ecosystems (HOME®)

Understanding HOME®

• Eco-hydraulic model that utilizes fish preference information relative to depth, velocity, substrate, and or cover

• Works in any aquatic or associated habitat• Combines these elements on a cell by cell basis

within GIS • Output is a map depicting where habitat is, and

the quality of the habitat relative to the species and life stage you are investigating.

Understanding HOME®

• Calculates Weighted Usable Area (WUA), a widely accepted habitat index

• WUA can be further classified into Good, Fair, or Poor quality

HOME® Background

HOME® Uses• Understanding current conditions • Determining limiting hydraulic/cover

factors• Flow optimization• Calculating habitat uplift and change • Alternatives analysis• Design assistance • Post construction effectiveness monitoring

Lessons Learned:

1. Quality Survey = Quality Results2. Engage HOME early for best results3. Know your species, set preference criteria with knowledgeable

folks4. Flow data matter – ungaged streams need attention5. Pick critical conditions, species and life stages to model for

efficiency
