ADVANCEMENT IN CONCRETE TECHNOLOGY

INTODUCTION What is concrete technology? Technology dealing :1. making concrete.2. Casting concrete.3. Ensuring efficient casting. Components of concrete :1. Cement.2. Fine aggregate.3. Coarse aggregate.4. Admixtures.5. Water.

EARLY HISTORY OF CEMENTIn ancient times, Egyptian mainly used

material obtained by burning gypsum.Greeks and Romans used material obtained

by burning limestone.First cement was invented by JOSEPH

ASPIDIN on 21st October 1824.

First cement was started in Portland in England.

In India, cement was first manufactured by South Indian

Industrials Ltd. In the year 1904.

Next generation was started by Indian Cement co Ltd.(1912-1913)

MANUFACTURE OF CEMENT

Two ways of manufacture of cement.1. Dry process.

2 . Wet process.

TYPES OF CONCRETECLASSIFICATION OF CONCRETE

ACCORDING TO THE DESIGN OF CONCRETE:

1. Plain cement concrete.

2. Reinforced cement concrete.

3. Pre-stressed concrete.

PLAIN CEMENT CONCRETE

Concrete having no reinforcement

Also called mass concrete

Strong in taking compression.

Weak in taking tension.

USE OF PLAIN CEMENT CONCRETE

PCC or Plain cement concrete is mainly used in foundation work and flooring work.

REINFORCED CEMENT CONCRETE

A advance type of concrete was first used or developed in 19thcentury in France by an French industrialist called FRANCOIS COIGNET.

This concrete was able to take compressive strength successfully along with high tensions .

Plain cement was reinforced with MS or TOR steel and TMT bars.

This type of concrete was economic and reduced the cross-section of the member components.

This concrete was previously used but as a reinforcing material as some other flexible or ductile material.

PRE-STRESSED CONCRETE

As the name suggest that a initial load is given to the member prior to use.

Pre-stressing reduces the effect of tension.

pre-stressing process

The concept of pre-stressing was invented centuries ago when metal bands were wound around wooden pieces (staves) to form a barrel.

USE OF PRE-STRESSED CONCRETE

Used in highway construction.

Used in making bridge.

Used in railway sleepers
