Victor Vasarely was born in Hungary in 1908. He

developed a mathmatically oriented type of abstract art in

the 1960’s called Op Art.

Vasarely worked as a graphic designer and began his career in Op Art with black and white shapes and

images.

Optical Art used repeated forms and colors to create movement and vibrating effects.

Vasarely used repeated forms and colors to fool the mind and give his work a 3-dimensional look.

A warping effect is seen in this Vasarely painting.

This type of Modern Art was popular in the 1960’s.

Vasarely had over 150 solo exhibits in his lifetime.

Does this painting fool your mind into thinking a sphere or ball is on the paper?

Color alone can create unusual effects in Op Art.

Repeated shapes can create the illusion of

movement.

Does this painting look like it is warping or swelling?

Victor Vasarely died in his Paris studio in 1997 at the age of 89. He will long be remembered for his

contribution to Op Art.
