Third Year Subject: Theory of Structures

Objectives :

The student will learn the determination of internal forces in different structures and the

kind of forces distribution due to external & internal effects .He will also learn about the

structures deformation due to these effects .

1,2 Introduction to the theory of structures. Types of structures, Loads, Supports.

3,4, Statically determinate structures & statically indeterminate structures.

5,6,7,8 Internal straining action , Normal force , Shearing force , Bending moment.

9, 10 Horizontal cantilever, Inclined cantilever, Simple beams, Beams with over hanging

ends , Compound beams .

11, 12, 13 Frames & trusses.

14, 15, 16 Influence lines, Definition & use , Beams , Trusses ( statically determinate ).

19 Moving load , Maximum moment and shear , Force in truss member.

20,21 Approximate analysis for indeterminate structures .

22, 23 Virtual work ( unit load method ).
