THE BASIS OF ENGLISH WRITING

1. THE PARAGRAPH UNITY It means that the sentences in a paragraph relate to and support the main idea.

2. THE PARAGRAPH COHERENCE

It means that the detailing sentences in the paragraph must also relate to one another.

2.1 WAYS TO ACHIEVE COHERENCE

a. Organize ideas b. Connect ideas

a. Tips to organize ideas -cronological order -spatial order -order of importance -developmental order -comparison/contrast

b. Tips to connect ideas - Repeat key words to link ideas -Use synonyms to connect back to key words -Use pronouns to relate back to key nouns - Use transition words and phrases

COMMON TRANSITIONSChronological order: first, second, then, by evening, in the beginning, soon, immediately, finally

Spatial order: above, below, right, next to, beyond, inside, behind

Order of Importance: first, second, more, most important, the largest, above all, furthermore, also, another

CONTINUATION…

Developmental Order: furthermore, besides, however, despite, another, as a result, therefore

Comparison/ Contrast: similarly, like, just, as, but, on the other hand, in contrast to however

3. COMPREHENSIBILITY

It means that the sentences in the paragraph should have the correct word order and word choice to convey meaning.

4. MECHANICS

It means the use of punctuation, spelling, capital letters, paragraph separation and so forth.
