Physical Science

PS 1b: Students know that all matter is made of atoms.

PS 1d: Students know that each element is made of one atom.

PS 1g: students know the properties of solids, liquid, and gases.

All About Matter

Everything in the Universe is Made of Matter

Matter in Our Solar System

The sun and the planets are made of matter.

Matter in your house

The breakfast you ate this morning was made of matter.

The cup of coffee your mother drank was made of matter, too.

Matter in you

Your body and that of all your friends is also made of matter.

When you die, your matter will not be destroyed, it will simply be transformed into “something” different than you.

Want more matter?

My own children are made of matter.

I am made of matter.

My dogs are also made of matter.

States of Matter

Solids

Solid is one of the states of matter.

Solids have a definite shape and volume.

The molecules in a solid a closely packed together.

Liquids

Liquids have a definite volume.

They take the shape of the container that holds them.

The molecules in liquids are not as closely packed as in solids.

The most common liquid is water.

Gases

Gases do not have a definite shape.

They take up the shape of the container that holds them.

The molecules in a gas are separated and they move all over the place.

Elements

Elements and Matter

Most matter an Earth, including organisms, is made from a small number of elements.

These elements include iron, oxygen, magnesium, silicon, carbon, hydrogen, and few others.

Elements

There are only 90 different elements on Earth. The rest of them have created in laboratories

Elements and life

Nearly all plants and animals have about the same element distribution. As a consequence, anything we use that is derived from life—paper, fabric, food, leather, and so on—is made almost entirely out of five elements.

ATOMS

Atoms and Matter

All matter is made of atoms. That means that everything you own, and everything you eat is made of atoms.

Atoms and Elements

All elements have only one kind of atom.

Atoms may combine to create compounds.
