SWOT and POAC
Neny Isharyanti
If you were Bella, which one would you choose?
Is there anyone here who is not a Twilight Saga fans?
• Sorry, I thought everybody is
• Don’t worry, I’ll help
Why would you choose him?
• Write down:
Qualities?
Other factors?
Are you done?
• Congratulations!
• You just did a SWOT analysis!
• You don’t need me
What is SWOT analysis?
• Albert Humphrey in 1960s
• a strategic planning tool to evaluate SWOT in a project or business venture
Steps in doing SWOT analysis
1. specifying the objective
2. identifying the internal and external factors that are favorable and unfavorable to achieve that objective
It’s all about the OBJECTIVE!
• Objective is important
• What is your objective?
• What can you use to achieve your objective?
What are the factors?
• S – Strengths
• W – Weaknesses
• O – Opportunities
• T – Threats
Two aspects used
• Internal vs. external
• Helpful vs. harmful for achieving the objective
SWOT analysis matrix
Strengths• What do you do well?• What unique resources can you
draw on?• What do others see as your
strengths?
Weaknesses• What could you improve?• Where do you have fewer
resources than others?• What are others likely to see as
weaknesses?
Opportunities• What opportunities are open to
you?• What trends could you take
advantage of?• How can you turn your strengths
into opportunities?
Threats• What threats could harm you?• What is your competition doing?• What threats do your weaknesses
expose you to?
SWOT Analysis
Now, look back at your analysis as Bella!
• Write down your objective
• Draw the SWOT analysis matrix
• Using your note earlier, read the factors that you wrote
• Put each factor in S, W, O, or T box
You have your SWOT analysis, now what?
• Let’s put them in work!
The Situation
• You have chosen Jacob or Edward as your partner and now it’s time to convince your father about your choice. Your father is not very happy about any of your choice, but you have to convince him, no matter what!
You will need POAC then!
• And you may ask what is POAC…
What is POAC management?
• George Terry
• A management concept
• A series of functions that an organization need to follow in order to achieve its objective(s)
The Steps applied in POAC management
Planning
• setting the
objective(s)
• assessing the
future
• developing a
course of
action (plan)
Organizing
• arranging
people and
physical
resources to
carry out the
plan
Actuating
• Implementing
the plan
Controlling
• determining
whether the
actual
operation are
consistent with
the plan
Boone and Kurtz, 1984
Now let’s make use of your knowledge
• Considering Bella’s situation, carry out POAC in order to achieve your objective of convincing Bella’s father of her choice
• Go at least until P and O (because A and C are not possible to be done now)
But Jacob and Edward are so out of reach..
• Let’s go to something that is close to our life, shall we?

• You will work in a team of 5 (a must!)• I will distribute a situation for your team. • Through the situations, you will learn to:
