Spatial Models for Elections

“…it is shown that the new spatial model of elections developed by Enelow and Hinich (1984a) is statistically equivalent to assuming that a classical factor structure underlies the data that voters provide concerning the issue positions of themselves and the candidates. A factor analysis of the sample correlation matrix of candidate variables averaged over voters and issues provides consistent estimates of the candidate locations in the space of predictive dimensions postulated by Enelow and Hinich, and the factor scores assigned to the voters can be used to project the voters onto the same predictive space with the candidates…” (Enelow, 1988)

Discussion

- based from the charts Noli and Loren seem to be clustered together at dimension 2 – what’s common with them? Their broadcasters – so I’ll term dimension 2 as Broadcast/Public service-based leadership – something that you acquire from the perception of the masses because you came from a mass media background

- obviously most will score in the middle but those who are from the province (farther from Manila), like Mar or from an entrepreneurial background like Villar will score very low on Dimension 2 – (probably because they were never associated with public service and/or broadcasting)
