Simple Finals

Spelling Rules

• A simple final can locate after an initial and become a part of syllable. For example:

tā 他

he, him

fó佛

buddha

sè 色

color

nǐ你

• A simple final can be used as an individual syllable. For example:

ā啊

(ah)

è饿

(hungry)

ò哦

(oh)

• If “i”, “u”, or “ü” is used as an individual syllable, “y” or “w” must be placed in front of it. The two dots above “ü” are omitted. For example:

yī一

(one)

yì亿

(a hundred million)

wǔ五

(five)

yú (= yǘ)鱼

(fish)

• When “ü” lies after initials “j”, “q” , “x” or “y”, the two dots above “ü” are omitted. For example:

jǔ (=jǚ) 举

qù (=qǜ)去

to go

xū(=xǖ) 须
