Social InteractionPARENTS VS. KIDS VS. SANTA

Around this time of year a large number of children are told all about Santa and encouraged to participate in the excitement of the traditions surrounding this well-known holiday figure. Is this wondrous belief embraced by children, or is it more for their parents. For this project I explored the interactions between children and mall Santa.

Mother wiping child’s face. This boy seemed indifferent to Santa, not making eye-contact or acknowledging his presents.

His mother seemed very determined to have the boy take a “good” picture with Santa.

Crying Little Elf

This child’s screamed from the second he was put in Santa’s arms.

His parents are pictured at the bottom holding up toys and trying to get him to stop and look their way.

The Uninterested and the Screamer.Pictured here is a mother and father trying to ease a child throwing a fit while their other child keeps his distance from the whole situation .

The Enthusiasts'These children had no trouble running up to Santa and telling him everything they could think of while mom stood back.

The Three Little Timids’ These boys hid behind

their father upon entering Santa’s immediate vicinity.

The smallest boy would not let go of his father’s leg, and cried until they left.

The Only High-Five

Santa held his hand up to a number of children for a high-five. This was the only child who returned the gesture while I was observing.

The Comfy Bear Hug

This little by ran right up to Santa and placed himself right into his arms. He seemed pleased and smiled for the picture before the photographer was even at the camera.

The Chatty SistersThese girls walked up to Santa and told him what they wanted for Christmas. However, neither of them would get too close to him and they would turn their heads frequently to track their mother.

The Hug QueenThis little girl ran right up to Santa and hugged him the whole time she talked to him.

The Boys Who Didn’t Mind

At first when the child who’s sitting on Santa’s lap was placed there, he looked like he was about to cry, but after a moment his face went indifferent.

The other child sat in the chair next to Santa and leaned in when asked.
