WELCOME Over the next 90 minutes, I will share with you a vision of what is possible in education

Note that in Pakistan it is not the poverty of resources but the poverty of vision in education

WITH SO MUCH GOING AGAINST US WE STILL MANAGE TO STAR…

AND PRODUCE STARS… SUCH AS THAT ABLE YOUNG MANWHO HAS PUT PAKISTAN IN THEGUINESS BOOK OF WORLD

RECORDS…

I AM GOING TO SHARE WITH YOU SOME NOTES ON THE

SOFFISTICATED ISSUE WHICH IS THE FOUNDING NOTE OF THIS PRESENTATION!

MODERN EDUCATION AND

PARENTS ROLE

NEW MILLENNIUM

THE 21ST CENTURY FOR WHICH WE ARE PREPARING OUR CHILDREN!

THREE PARTSTHIS PRESENTATION HAS THREE PARTS,

RESPONDING TO THREE QUESTIONS:

WHERE WERE WE?

WHERE ARE WE? AND

WHAT MUST WE DO TO REACH WHERE WE WISH TO GO?

WHERE WERE WE?IN THE CONTEXT OF SCHOOLS AND

SYSTEMS OF EDUCATION, WHAT HAS BEEN OUR PAST LIKE?

We need to know what the history was… how did the school system come about and if possible to see what it was like.

BECAUSE ONLY THEN WILL WEBE ABLE TO KNOW WHY DO WE HAVE THE

PARTICULAR FORMS OF LEARNING ARRANGEMENTS ….

THOSE WHO IGNORE THE PAST ARE CONDEMNED TO REPEAT IT

---George Santayana

The developed countriesFollowed one path to the modern global

economy but less developed countries had other priorities.

They had a need to achieve economic “lift off” for their people.

Thus they put more emphasis of basic literacy skills, and elementary schooling.

BUT THEY DID SO WITH GREATLIMITATIONS:RESOURCES WERE SCARCE;CALSS SIZES WERE (and still are) LARGE;

TEACHERS’ EXPERTISE AND SALARIES WERE POOR

TEACHING REMAINED INTHE PRE-PROFESSIONAL AGE,

WHERE TEACHERS STRUGGLED TO TEACH A LIMITED CURRICULUM WITH A RESTRICTED RANGE OF STRATEGIES.

LOOK BACK AND AROUNDSO LET US LOOK AT SOME PHOTOGRAPHS

WHICH WILL HELP US TO CONNECT THE PAST WITH THE PRESENT…

PAST AND PRESENTPLEASE OPEN THE HISTORY FROM

PHOTOGRAPHS FOLDER…

WERE YOU SURPRISED?THE MORE THINGS CHANGE… THE MORE

THEY REMAIN THE SAME!!!

SOMEHOW, WHILE THE GLOBALIZATION OF THE ECONOMY AND THE MARKETPLACE CHANGED RADICALLY,

TEACHING REMAINED STUCK WITH THE SAME “GRAMMAR” OF PRE-MODERN PRINCIPLES.

SCHOOLS WERE STILL RULED BY CLOCKS AND BELLS,PERIODS AND CLASSES,CHILDREN WERE GROUPED BY AGE TAUGHT MEMORIZABLE KNOWLEDGE

VIA A STANDARDIZED CURRICULUMAND CONVENTIONALLY TESTED

--- sounds familiar?

A moment to ponder…On the one hand we have a world increasingly

complex

Interdependent and

Fast paced

GENERATING URGENT AND UNPREDICTABLE PROBLEMS THAT DEMAND INSTANT AND EFFECTIVE RESPONSES…

A HIGHLY INTERDEPENDENT WORLDSTOCKMARKET TRADING IN ARGENTINA OR

THAILAND CAN UNDERMINE CONFIDENCE IN ECONOMIES ELSEWHERE;

GLOBAL WARMING DUE TO CARBON DIOXIDE IN ONE PART OF THE WORLD CAN CAUSE FLOODS AND GALES IN ANOTHER

MACHINESCOMPUTERS CAN MAKE DATA AVAILABLE

INSTANTLY…

PLANNINGS

AND SO IN 1999 , THE BRITISH PRESS ASKED THE READERS TO SUGGEST WHAT KIND OF SCHOOL WOULD THEY LIKE IN THE NEXT MILLENNIUM…

THE SCHOOL I WOULD LIKE

A beautiful school with glass dome roofs to let in the light, uncluttered classrooms and brightly coloured walls.

A comfortable school with sofas and beanbags, cushions on the floors, tables that don't scrape our knees, blinds that keep out the sun, and quiet rooms where we can chill out.

IDEAL PLACEA safe school with swipe cards for the

school gate, anti-bully alarms, first-aid classes, and someone to talk to about our problems.

A listening school with children on the governing body, class representatives and the chance to vote for teachers.

DREAM SCHOOLA flexible school without rigid

timetables or exams, without compulsory homework, without a one-size-fits-all curriculum, so we can follow our own interests and spend more time on what we enjoy.

A school without walls so we can go outside and learn, with animals to look after and wild gardens to explore.

A relevant school where we are not treated as empty vessels to be filled with information, where teachers treat us as individuals, where children and adults can talk freely to each other, and our opinion matters.

A school for everybody with boys and girls from all backgrounds and abilities, with no grading, so we don't compete against each other, but just do our best.

At School we’d like, we’d have :

Enough pencils and books for each child.

Laptops so we could continue our work outside and at home.

Drinking water in every classroom, and fountains of soft drinks in the playground.

FEATURESSchool uniforms of trainers, baseball caps and fleece tracksuits.

Clean toilets that lock, with paper and soap, and flushes not chains.

MORE TO DO• Large lockers to store our things.

• A swimming pool.

This is what we'd like.

IT IS NOT AN IMPOSSIBLE

DREAM

SUCH REQUESTS ARE NOT

UNREASONABLE. LEARNERS IN ALL

SITES OF EDUCATION WOULD LIKELY

WANT MUCH OF THIS, AND WE CAN

RECOGNIZE THAT MANY OF THESE

THINGS ARE EVIDENT RIGHT NOW IN

SOME SCHOOLS.

ADULTS TURNAS ONLY YOUNGER EXECUTIVES MANAGE

TO RESPOND SO FAST, THE CHALLENGE REMAINS :

WHAT MUST WE DO AS PARENTS IN SUCH A WORLD?

WHICH THEN BEGINS THE THIRD PART OF MY PRESENTATION

THE PARENTS MUSTPLAN AND MANAGE THE FOLLOWING ROLES

THE PARENTS MUSTBE A CHEERLEEDERBE A FRIENDBE A TEACHERBE THE ENFORCER

A CHEERLEEDERChildren thrive on encouragement

Congratulate them for success

A FRIENDWilling to hear ConfidantStress RelieverUnderstandingFoster Trust

A TEACHERIndividual needs Personal AttentionStay in touch with [assignments, tests and

ongoing projects]Available EnthusiasticConnect with their teachers

THE ENFORCERDisciplineSet and keep SchedulesReach goals Complete assignments on timeDon't expect Patient but Unwavering Strict or Firm

SMART WORKWORK SMARTER THAN HARDER

DO NOT DO THE THINGS FOR YOUNG PEOPLE THAT THEY CAN DO FOR THEMSELVES

FOCUS ON PROGRESS RATHER THAN ON PERFECTION

FINALLY REMEMBEROUR CHILDREN ARE GOD’S GIFT TO USHOW WE BRING THEM UP IS OUR GIFT TO

GOD

OUT OF ALL THESE PERHAPS IF I CAN LEAVE WITH JUST ONE

DEEP EMPHASIS,ONE POINT AGENDA FOR TODAY ,

JUST ONE MESSAGE TO TAKE HOME, ONE PLEDGE

MY MEETING YOU ALL WILL HAVE BEEN WORHTWHILE

AND IT IS POINT JUST TO CONSIDER….LET US

LEARN TO TEACH IN WAYS

WE WERE NOT TAUGHT
