Different definitions of ‘culture’

• Some think that it refers to the customs ( 習俗 ) and lifestyles ( 生活方式 ) of a particular social group.

• E.g. Different places have different dining culture.

Different definitions of ‘culture’

• Some think that culture refers to spiritual wealth ( 精神上的財富 ) that is created by people, such as literature ( 文學 ), art ( 藝術 ) and science ( 科學 ).

Cultural Globalization

• Cultural globalization can be approached from different angles.

E.g. 1) The popularisation ( 普及 ) of cultural property ( 文化財產 ) Involves the global distribution of cultural products such as fictions,

films and songs. 2) The popularisation of cultural attitudes ( 文化態度 ) Involves the spread of such ideas as democracy ( 民主 ), human right

s and striving for efficiency ( 對效率的追求 ).

• Unit 5 explores the popularisation of cultural attitudes.

Task 1 – The globalization of McDonald’s

• McDonald’s can be found on six continents ( 洲 ), with over 30,000 restaurants worldwide.

• It continues to expand its territory by opening 1,850 new restaurants every year.

The global development of McDonald’s

• In 1955, McDonald’s Corporation was founded by Ray Kroc.

• In 1967, McDonald’s opened a restaurant which is the first branch outside America in Canada.

• In 1975, Hong Kong’s first McDonald’s opened on Paterson Street, Causeway Bay ( 銅鑼灣百德新街 ).

Franchises ( 特許經營 )

• Apart from opening branches in different parts of the world, McDonald’s also offers franchises to allow local people to invest in and open their own McDonald’s branches.
