Information and Behaviour

Some insights into Library and Information Science

Uxcamp Europe 2010

Here is my plan

• What do we do?• What is the digital divide?• What is information literacy and what does

that signifie?• Plagiarism – a seious problem• Why should I care? – Enterprise 2.0

What do we do?

• Library and Information Science has little to do with books

• We study the collection (i.e. databases), the retrieval (i.e. search algorithms) and storage of information (i.e. long term preservation)

Digital Divide

Domestic Divide: http://www.hearusnow.org/other/6/3/itsonlyfairallamericansshouldhaveaccesstotheinternet/

Information Literacy

Information literacy

• "To be information literate, a person must be able to recognize when information is needed and have the ability to locate, evaluate, and use effectively the needed information."American Library Association / Presidential Committee on Information Literacy: Final Report, Washington D.C. 10.1.1989

What do users not know

• Lack of information about the medium Internet (structure, browsers, site-iternal search tools etc.)

• Lack of information about terms (i.e. plug-in, server, ica-client)

• Lack of knowledge about buttons and icons (help symbols)

• Lack of knowledge about processes (i.e. flash installation)

Plagiarism

• serious problem• More cases in universities• Complete lack of understanding why it is a

problem• My case@publisher: 1 of 10 submitted

manuscripts is plagiarism

Why should we care?

• Students produce in public (in wikis, in blogs)• http://www.matti-stoehr.ddrs.de/?p=25• http://bildungundgutesleben.blogsome.com/

• Company versus private knowledge• Sharing vs keeping
