Do you think that the lifestyle of the inhabitants of your town or
city reflects behavior that is in line with the concept of
sustainable development?
Munich, Germany

While the ecconomy and
population grows
globally, the resource
constaints tighten
enormously.
We put ourselfs at risk.
2
Then Now
Our world has changed.
managing our use of
natural capital and not
overusing it is a key for
sustainable economic
success.
Unlimited resources fueled our economies
in past times.
Now humanity demands over 50 percent -
more than what the planet
can regenerate.

What is sustainable
development?
5
Sustainable development is
development that meets the
needs of the present without
compromising the ability of
future generations to meet
their own needs. It contains
within it two key concepts:
the concept of needs, in
particular the essential
needs of the world's poor,
to which overriding
priority should be given;
and
the idea of limitations
imposed by the state of
technology and social
organization on the
environment's ability to
meet present and future
needs

critical factors to sustainability

1.000 Mrd. t CO2
Until 2050
(1/3 has already be
emitted between
2000 and 2008)
Remaining global emission budget
(2000-2050): 1000 Mrd. t Co2
CO2 Emission has to decrease until
2050 for 80%-95%
It is indispensable for a sustainable
develpement to change our
energysystem and renew our
infrastructure

Cities are the polluters.
Cities as Munich,
Germany.
Citys cause 80% of greenhouse
gas emissions and use 75% of the
energy but cover only 1% of the
planet and are inhabited by only
50% of the worlds population

Total CO2 Emission in Munich
Three main generators of
Munich‘s CO2 emission have
been identified.
Heat
The biggest part of the
pullution is caused by
burning fossil fuels.
Consuming heating oil, gas
and disntict heating mainly
creates the greenhouse
effect.
Traffic
People are traveling from A to
B. 75% of traffic emission is
caused by automobile
exhaust. Trucks cause 15% of
this emission.

Measures: Extending the public
transportation system. Conversion to
electonic mobility and car sharing
concepts. Charge fees to enter the city
center by car. Use of bio fuels.
How to reduce the CO2 Emission? There are two
ways out.
1. Efficiancy 2. Conversion of the energy supply
Measures: with thermal insulation the
energy demand can be reduced by up to
80%. Conversion costs will be
refinanced through energy cost savings.
State subsidaries have to be enhanced
to make insulation more intersting.
Advertisement is necassary to bring the
importance of insulation in people
minds.
Electricity generation has to be changed
to reneable and low CO2 energy sources
such as solar- water- and wind energy.
Local and global energy gerneration to
increase the market‘s competitiveness.
