How to Make Sentences

It’s as easy as 1, 2, 3, 4

Step One: Capitalization

• Begin your sentence with a capital letter.

• Remember: ALL SENTENCES BEGIN WITH A CAPITAL LETTER!

Step Two: Subject

• The subject tells who or what the sentence is about. It always includes a noun.

• What is a noun? A noun tells who does the action. It can be a person, place, or thing.

Example:The large dog barked angrily at the

stranger.

Step Three: Predicate

• The predicate tells about the subject. It always include a verb.

• What is a verb? A verb tells what the noun is doing.

Example:

The large dog barked angrily at the stranger.

Two Parts to a Sentence

• Remember: a sentence always contain TWO parts:

1. SUBJECT

and

2. PREDICAT.E

Step Four: Punctuation• Make sure the sentence

ends with punctuation.

• What is punctuation? A punctuation mark is what goes at the ending. It can be a period, question mark, or an exclamation point.

• Go back and make sure you began your sentence with a capital letter.

AND THEN…….

• Go back and make sure that you ended your sentence with a punctuation mark. Did you use a period, question mark, or exclamation point?

• Does your sentence make sense?

Types of Sentences

• There are four types of sentences.

• 1. Declarative: statement• 2. Imperative: command• 3. Interrogative: question• 4. Exclamatory: emotions

Declarative Sentences

• Declarative sentences make a statement.

• Declarative sentences end with a period. (.)

Example:

We ate salad.

Imperative Sentences

• Imperative sentences give an order or commands something.

• Imperative sentences end with a period or an exclamation point. (.) (!)

Example:

Make me a salad.

Interrogative Sentences

• Interrogative sentences ask a question.

• Interrogative sentences end with a question mark. (?).

Example:

Did you eat my salad?

Exclamatory Sentences

• Exclamatory sentences express strong emotions.

• Exclamatory sentences end with an exclamation point (!).

Example:

I love my salad!
