PRESENTATION OVERVIEW

• • OBJECTIVE• WI- FI• WI- MAX• 3-G• ARCHITECTURE• B / W VS MOBILITY• CONCLUSION

OBJECTIVE

• This paper focuses on concepts of WI-MAX technology which employs microwave for the transfer of data wirelessly and it also presents its comparison with WI-Fl, and 3G technologies .

Introduction

• High bit-rate wireless applications in a multi path radio environment.

• OFDM can enable such applications without a high complexity receiver. • OFDM is sometimes called multi-carrier or discrete multi-tone modulation

• OFDM is part of WLAN, DVB, and BWA standards and is a strong candidate for some of the 4G wireless technologies.

Considerations in Multipath Transmission

• Fading due to constructive and destructive addition of multipath signals.

• Channel delay spread can cause ISI.

•Frequency selective fading and ISI go together.

• The ratio of RMS delay spread to the data symbol period determines the severity of the ISI.

Dealing with Multipath

Multipath transmission in a

broadcasting application

• This will bring consumers improved quality, sound, pictures and

videos, as well as increased speed when downloading games and

ring tones

Seamless co-existence of Wi Fi and Wi Max NetworksSeamless co-existence of Wi Fi and Wi Max Networks

WIMAX - FEATURES

• The signals can be run very close to each other on wireless channels.

• Super narrow lanes can put a lot of traffic over them without disturb -ance.

Multi carrier

Single carrier

Sub Channels

Advantages of Wi-Fi • It Uses an unlicensed portion of the broadcast spectrum,

and requires less regulatory controls in many countries.

• It frees network devices from cables, allows for a more dynamic network to be grown.

• Many reliable and bug-free WI-Fl products on the market.

• Competition amongst vendors has lowered price considerably since their inception.

• It is possible to move without breaking the network connection while connected on a WI-Fl network.

* The 802.11g and 802.11b standards of WI-Fl use the 2.4GHz spectrum, which is crowded with other devices such

as blue tooth, microwave ovens, and cordless phones. It may cause degradation in performance. Other devices, which use microwave frequencies such as certain typesOf cell phones, can also cause degradation in perform -

ance.

* Power consumption is fairly high compared toOther standards, making battery life and heat a matter of

concern.

Disadvantages of WI-FI

(3rd generation) 3G

• 3G stand for 3rd generation mobile telephone systems. It is a technology for mobile service providers.

• 3G combines. high- speed mobile access with Internet Protocol (IP) based services.

• 3G can use a variety of present and future wireless network technologies.

ARCHITECTURE- WI FI

Wi Fi building block are:

1. Antenna2. Access Point (AP)3. Router4. Internet access

Wi-fi Network Cell• WIFI network cell for 802.1l b

standard

• This standard defines 11 channels . The RF reach of each

channel is about 160 ft in doors or about 300ft outdoors.

• There are three non-over - lapping channels (channels, 1, 6,

11) . Channels 1, 6, and 11 are typically used to cover a large area

ARCHITECTURE - WI MAX

• Wi-MAX architecture is similar to the cellular telephony in that a service area is divided into cells

• Wi-MAX is able to operate in a Line Of Sight (LOS) and near or non LOS (NLOS) access approach.

WI-FI AND WI-MAX•

Wi- Fi uses unlicensed shared spectrum.

This has importantimplications for

• Cost of Service

• Quality of Service (QoS)

• Congestion Management

• Industry structure

BANDWIDTH VS MOBILITY

3G AND WIFI

3 G AND WIMAX

FINAL THOUGHTS

• Wi-Fi is good for competition and has an extension to WI-MAX.

• Wi-Fi and 3G complement each other for a mobile provider

• Success of Wi-Fi is potentially good for multimedia

content.

At a long distance but with reduced bandwidth one can

communicate with 3G efficiently.

• On the other hand Wi-Fi can be used to Communicate at a short distance but at a much Higher data rate.

• WI-MAX is used to cover large area, which overcome the disadvantage of WI Fl

• Depending on the requirements the , technologies can coexist.
