Environmental Problems

Air pollution

About 400,000 People die each year in Chinese cities due to air pollution.

Flood - Storm water

Dr. Roger Pielke, Jr., who has done significant research concerning the determination of flooding related losses has an assessment of the damages between 100 and 150 billion dollar  (U.S.A)

Energy Consumption - Waste

Global warming

Noise Pollution

Freedom of Information Act (FOI) request reveal in the period April 2008 - 2009UK councils received 315,838 complaints about noise pollution from private residences.

Any solution?

What is green roof?

What are the Green roofs?

•Roofs that are purposely fitted or with vegetation are known as green roofs or living roofs.(CIBSE Knowledge series) / which is simply green in the economic sense (Gary Grant)

•The modern green roofs started from Germany in the 1970s and 1980s.

Technical Detail of Green roofs

Types of Green Roof

•Three main types of Green Roof:

1. Extensive: extensive sedum or extensive biodiverse

2. Simple intensive (Semi-intensive): which can also be biodiverse

3. Intensive:

Extensive Sedum

Depth of substrate: 20-100mm Suitable flora: mosses, grasses,

some flowering plants, etcMaintenance requirement: Low

Relative cost: LowGood effect on summer

overheating/attenuation of storm water moderate to good

Extensive biodiverse(rubble roof or brown roof)

Depth of substrate: less than 100mm

Suitable flora: self-seed, local plant

Maintenance requirement: Very low

Relative cost: LowSlight effect on summer

overheating / Negligible winter insulation / attenuation of

storm water good

Simple intensive

Depth of substrate: 150-500mm Suitable flora: grasses, typical flowering garden plants and

shrubsMaintenance requirement: require some maintenance

Relative cost: moderateexcellent effect on summer

overheating / negligible on winter insulation / attenuation of

storm water good to excellent

Intensive (Roof Garden)

Depth of substrate: 150-500mm Suitable flora: all vegetationMaintenance requirement:

frequentRelative cost: High

Excellent effect on summer overheating/attenuation of

storm water good to excellent

How does it work?

Green Roof system absorbs many of the mineral in the polluted air into its soil as nutrition, thus reducing the smog

How does it work? (Cont)Green roof absorb the CO2 and produce O2 through the process of photosynthesis, thus cleaning the air we breath

How it works? (Cont)Green Roof system will hold approximately 70% of the rainwater from a 6cm downpour. The water is released gradually through evaporation and over flow. This system protect the roof from the elements. Such a roof protection would usually cover the initial costs of the Green Roof installation.

How does it work? (cont)Green Roof insulation the building thus reducing writer energy costs.

Whilst there are conflicting views on the causes of global warming it is widely agreed that Green Roof create a cooler/cleaner environment.

How does it work? (cont)Green Roof have a natural cooling effect and can shield the building from the heat of the sun thus less energy for air conditioning needed.

The cooling effects of green roof improved the performance of solar panels.

How does it work?(cont)Green Roof absorb noise and prevent it from bouncing into adjacent buildings.

How does it work? (cont)

Green Roof contribute to the quality life for residents.

It encourage wildlife to return t o the cities

What is the next?

•There are enough evidence and successful examples of real benefit of Green Roofs.

•Architects, planners, engineer, developers, builders need to realise its potential power and need to use more widely.

• More research is required to quantify other more obvious benefits.

•Legislation need to be changed to encourage people to use Green roof more.

The future Desinged by architects Emilio Ambasz & Associates

and opened in 1993, the ACROS building

complements and effectively extends the adjacent Tenjin

Central Park

The futureThis is a Hundertwasser Building in Vienna, Austria, designed by Friedensreich Hundertwasser.
