Greek MythTheseus and the minotaur

Legend has it that a long time ago, on the Greek island of Crete there lived a king named Minos. The king’s wife had a monstrous son , with the head of a bull and the body of a human. This beast was called the Minotaur and it terrorized the city of Athens.

Every seven years Athens had to send seven boys and seven girls to the Minotaur sothat it could eat them.

The time came when Theseus, the son of the king of Athens, Aegeus ,was old enough to be sent to the Minotaur. He decided that he would kill the Minotaur.

The Minotaur was confined in a labyrinth that had been built by Daedalus, the king’s best architect. It was so big and had so many passages and rooms that once you went inside you would be lost forever and could never find your way out.

Luckily when he arrived in Crete, Theseus met the kings daughter, Ariadna. She fell in love with him and gave him a ball of string in order to help him find his way out of the labyrinth.

As Theseus enters the labyrinth he lets the string unwind behind him.

He returned, victorious to Athens.

Theseus killed the Minotaur while it was sleeping. Then all he had to do was follow the string to escape from the labyrinth.

Minos was furious so he trapped Daedalus and his son Icarus in the labyrinth. In order to escape Daedalus made wings from birds feathers, which he stuck together with wax.

Icarus flew too high and the sun melted the wax so he fell into the sea and drowned.
