What Subject Choices do I Have?

Group 1 - Studies in language & LiteratureEnglish LiteratureThe Traditional English Lit course - novels, plays, poetry etc...

English language & LiteratureLess Lit… but with additional language in cultural contexts, media, communication etc...

Korean LitSame as English Lit… just in Korean First Language must be Korean

Japanese LitSame as English Lit… just in JapaneseFirst language must be Japanese

Filipino LitSame as English Lit… just in FilipinoNot an easy option!

Self-Taught (SL Only)ScheduledTutorMr LightbownLiterature Study

Group 2 - Language AcquisitionFrenchSL / HL / Ab Initio

SpanishSL / HL / Ab Initio

MandarinSL / HL / Ab InitioNew Option

Key ConsiderationsLanguage pathways generally set - Grade 9 & 10 course and level should ideally be pursuedBetter to achieve proficiency in one language than to try manyAb Initio is not an easy option!

Group 3 - Social Studies / HumanitiesGeography SL/HLFamiliar - Global studies following on from grade 9 course

History SL/HLWorld History Course

Psychology SL/HLUnfamiliar Course -Information Feb 8th Assembly

Economics SL/HLUnfamiliar Course -Information Feb 8th Assembly

Computer ScienceShould have some programming / coding skills to succeed here.

Design TechnologyNo prerequisite but experience in intro / explore DT or robotics would be an advantage

Group 4 - SciencesKey Considerations

+ Science pathways are determined to some extent by grade 9 / 10 choices

+ Not Fixed! - Integrated science does allow HL single sciences+ Some US colleges prefer traditional sciences+ Some Career paths require certain sciences - Medicine = Bio /

Chem+ Engineering traditionally = Physics / Chem+ HL Physics needs at least SL Math

Group 5 - MathematicsMath Studies Math SL Math HL

Key ConsiderationsYou will receive a teacher recommendation for best Math level for you… best to abide by thisCan Change - it is a recommendation onlyCheck college / course / country requirement carefully… important!

Group 6 - The Arts - (Optional Group)FilmInto / Explore would be helpful but not necessary

TheatreInto / Explore would be helpful but not necessary

Visual ArtsInto / Explore would be helpful but not necessary

Key ConsiderationsNo Exams!Consider stress / balance / EnjoymentPortfolio / examples of work requirements for collegeDon’t under-value the arts!

I need to take two sciences!!

AP classes are preferred in the USA admissions process.

I HAVE to take the same language all four years.

IB students have no life!

The ARTS are not as important in the IB program/college admissions process.

If I want to study business, I should take IB Biz Mngmt & IB Economics.

I MUST take the full IB if I want to attend college outside of the USA.

I won’t get into college if I take Math Studies.

I am not smart if I do not do the full IB.

Option 2: The Partial IB Diploma

The IB Partial diplomaThe student can sit a range of IB courses and exams to suit themselves

No requirements in terms of Groups

No requirements in terms of HL / SL

No Extended essay or Theory of Knowledge
