There Are Different Ways to Listen!

Just like with reading, you can use different skills when you listen

For example, with reading, you have learned:

There are skills you can practice to listen more effectively

Selective Listening

What – selective listening happens when you do not focus on all of the words being spoken, just the specific information you are interested in

When – you would use selective listening when you were interested in learning a specific piece of information

What are the hours of a certain business?

Is there a process you need to follow before going somewhere?

Know what you need to before doing something so you don’t have to repeat a step or do something unnecessarily

When learning a new language it can be very hard to know what is important to listen to and what isn’t!

It’s a process

Just like with everything you’ve learned, selective listening takes practice

Tips for Listening Selectively

Plan

Think ahead about what you want to learn or what you want to know so that you will know what to listen for

Write down questions you want to have answered, the information you want to obtain. For example

How much will this cost?

Where is this located/what is the address?

What time does the program start?

More Tips…

Listen

Listen more than once if you need to, call back and listen to the recording again

Ask whomever is speaking to repeat the point that was interesting to you

Write

Notes with information you are interested in (while you listen)

Questions you would like ask to receive clarification
