CONCEPT OF FASTING IN HINDUISM

Tuesday fasting is common in southern India as well as northwestern India. In the south, it is believed that Tuesday is dedicated to Goddess Mariamman. Devotees eat before sunrise and drink only liquids between sunrise and sunset. In the North, Tuesday is dedicated to Lord Hanuman and devotees are allowed only to consume milk and fruit between sunrise and sunset.

CONCEPT OF FASTING IN CHRISTIANITY

For Roman Catholics, fasting is the reduction of one's intake of food to one full meal (which may not contain meat on Fridays throughout Lent) and two small meals (known liturgically as collations, taken in the morning and the evening), both of which together should not equal the large meal. Eating solid food between meals is not permitted. Fasting is required of the faithful between the ages of 18 and 59 on specified days.

SPIRITUAL BENEFITS Fasting is a unique moral and spiritual characteristic of Islam. It has amazing benefits. It draws you closer to God, gives perspective, and boosts your health. It’s beneficial not only physically but also spiritually.

GAINING TAQWAATaqwa (Arabic: تقوى taqwā / taqwá ) is an Islamic term for being conscious & cognizant of Allah, of truth, of the rational reality, "piety, fear of God". It is often found in the Quran.

PATIENCEFasting is a practice for being patient. By fasting, we go through a good training of patience. We experience high ethics in our own worlds. We accustom our stomach to patience by not eating anything though we are hungry, by not drinking even a sip of water though our throat dries out of thirst.

REFRAINING FROM SINFasting trains the person to avoid desires and to keep away from sin; it helps a person to overcome his own nature and to wean himself away from bad habits.

WORSHIPWorship is another aspect during fasting that will become more intimate. Giving glory to God in worship will re-energize your spirit man.

PEACE OF MINDFasting gives emotional strength during trials and times of anxiety.

DEVOTIONSacrificing meals or behaviors will create a fresh devotion to God.

THINKING OF OTHERSA period fasting for others creates unity. It gets you mind off your own worries and allows you to intercede on the behalf of others.

A NEW SATISFACTION When you finish your fast, renewed, full of energy with a new desire, a new praise and sensitivity to God’s voice, you’ll find that the absence of food was small in comparison to what you gained.
