HISTORICAL BACKGROUND

SHEIKH ZAYED GRAND MOSQUE

• Supervised by Italian architects, Rocco Magnoli and Lorenzo Carmellini.

• Nicknamed the mosque of the flowers• Located in Abu Dhabi, capital of the United Arab Emirates

• The third largest mosque in the world.

• 22,412 square meter area.

• Can accommodate up to 40,690 worshippers.

• Also known as the mosque of the flowers

• Its a sacred place to honor the memory of Sheikh

Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan

• Its remarkable mosaic work is the product of an

Italian company, Fantini Mosaici.

• A meeting point for the middle east, the west and

the far east.

• The mosaic work took more than 2 years to

complete.

• inspired by a vision of tolerance.

• Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan was personally

involved in the design of this mosque.

• The mosque has been built based on the sultan’s

personal preferences and taste.

STRUCTURE AND LAYOUT OF THE MOSQUE

• Main areas in the mosque;

A – Main Prayer Hall: 2500 panels measuring 250 x 250 cm each.Based on pentagram concept, with 5 edgesThe marble was polished, sand-blasted and bush-hammered.

Most part of the mosque has been decorated with floral patterns.

B – Qibla Wall The wall extending along the qibla was designed in two

lateral sections reflecting the pattern In the center of the hall is the mihrab

C – North and South Entrance and VIP area Transparency of the glass contained in the large doors

SPECIAL FEATURES

• The exterior concept cool white light at the full moon, shifting color every two

evenings, and getting bluer as the moon wanes.

• The interior concept lighting design needed to provide coherence to the complex

architecture and interior design. building appears to glow with a natural luminance despite the

predominance of artificial light sources. Each material is lit with an appropriate technique revealing its

texture and natural veining
