In the spirit of Mythbusters! Not your grandmother’s documentary…

About the Challenge

• Encourage science exploration among American students

• Promote the importance of science communication

• Science is cool enough to do for life

• 540,000 middle schools students

Prizes!Semifinalists

• One per state and DC (51 total)

• $250

• Certificate of recognition

• T-shirt

• Plaque for the school

• Plaque for the student’s teacher

Prizes!Finalists

• Ten highest scores from semifinalists

• All-expenses-paid trip to Washington, DC for student and one parent/guardian (10/4-7)

• Opportunity to appear on television

• The Young Scientist Challenge medal

• Special Young Scientist Challenge apparel

Prizes!Winner stage

• Ten finalist compete in Washington 10/4-7

• 1st place: $50,000 U.S. Savings Bond

• 2nd place – 10th place: $1,000

• The title: “America’s Top Young Scientist”

Eligibility• Grades 5 - 8

• Parent or legal guardian must sign waiver

• Public, private, parochial, home school

• Student is legal U.S. resident

• 50 states and District of Columbia

• Not part of Discovery, judges, etc.

Eligibility

• Follow the safety guidelines– No explosives, firearms, human blood/bodily

fluid, poison, radioactive material, no body parts in danger – BE SAFE

• One submission per student• Only student can appear in video• Copyright compliant (no DEstreaming)• Submit by 6:59 PM ET, June 15, 2008• Check website for full details

What is a submission?

• Video one to two minutes long (60 – 120 seconds)

• Select 1 of these six concepts:– Explain the Doppler Effect– What is a parabola, paraboloid, or parabolic

mirror– Why is the earth’s sky blue?

What is a submission?

– Explain how a space craft can orbit the earth – Electrical currents and magnets: how fields

around them exert forces on each other – power up!

– Explain and demonstrate the Bernouli Principle or the Venturi Effect – or both wet and wild!
