Simplistic IntutionWhen we think about how people Work?

We think with MONEY we can direct anyone to work how ever we want !!

Mountain Climbing Example

Belief Reality

• Full of joy•Full of Happiness•Full of Excitement

• Full of Misery• Difficulty in breathing• Difficulty in walking

Explain?

Mountain Climbing Example

But still they do.. Why?

Because of happiness they get in:- Reaching the end- Reaching the peak- Facing the challenges

1. Experiment

Pay People to build Bionicles

1

•Ask people to build Bionicle for three dollars

2

•If people said yes they built with the Legos

3

•When they finished, their bionicles were put under the table

4

•Asked if they would like to build another one this time for $2.70

5

•If they said yes, gave them another one, and when they finished

6

•Asked if they were ready to build another for $2.40, $2.10 & so on

Pay People to build Bionicles

Result: Experiment continued until at some point people said, “ No

more. It‘s not worth it for me." This was what we called the meaningful condition

2. Sisyphic condition

Another conditon to the previous experiment :s Where in it was an endless cycle of people building bionicles, and experimenter destroying in front of their eyes

Comparing two Conditions

• Though there was not a real opportunity for big meaning• But even the small meaning made a difference

MEANINGFUL

People built eleven Bionicles in the meaningful condition

SISYPHIC

People built seven Bionicles in the Sisyphus condition

SISYPHIC

No. of Bionicles

Love for Legos

Meaningful

2. Experiment

People should find pairs of letters that were identical next to each other

Inferences

Ignoring the performance of people is almost as bad as shredding their effort in front of their eyes

That adding motivation doesn't seem to be so difficult

1. Illustration

After assembling the pieces,I seem to like those IKEA pieces of

furniture more than I like other ones

2. Illustration

After few days people didnt wanted to use

this..But why ? Coz ‘It didn't really feel like

your own’

How do we look at this question experimentally?

1. Origami Making

Ugly- nothing like a frog or crane

Origami Evaluation

Builder valued at ‘5x’ timesEvaluator valued it as ‘x’

Evaluators= Builders

2. Origami Making

Now, origami should be made without instruction

Uglier than the first version

Origami Evaluation

Builder valued at ‘7x’ timesEvaluator valued it as ‘x’

Builder loved it more coz of the extra effort put in

Notion of Efficiency

Karl MarxEx. of a pin factory. Said pins have 12 different steps If one person does all 12 steps, production is very low But if one person to do step one, and one person to do step two and so on, production can increase tremendously

On the other hand, If one person do all 12 steps, they care about the pin But if one person do one step every time, maybe they don't care as much

Is efficiency still more important than meaning?

NO

What is important to Labour?
