Consumerism is a modern movement when the protection of the consumer against useless, inferior, or dangerous products, misleading advertising, unfair pricing, etc.

What is consumerism?

People have been purchasing goods and materials in excess of their basic needs, which has been used in any society including ancient civilizations like Ancient Egypt and Ancient Rome. In 1899, Thorstein Veblen would criticize consumerism in his works.

Who/Where?

According to some studies, we over consume because it makes us happy and we can say that it’s considered as an addiction.

Why?

Since the beginning of the 1800’s the world has been consuming a higher rate than ever.

When?

People replace their stuff with newer ones. They purchase stuff, use them and then throw them away and buy newer ones. We buy things we don’t need with money we don’t have to impress people we don’t like.

How?

“The more stitches, the less riches” pg. 81

Consumerism In Brave New World

We think that what the author is trying to tell us is that instead of being happy with what you already have or making something better out of the things you have already, buy new ones. We don’t agree with the author because we believe consumerism is wrong and it needs to be stopped. Consumerism is not healthy at all.
