This tutorial is intended to:

Introduce all the tools in the app

Illustrate a sample activity that can be done

using the app

About this Tutorial

Choreo Graph lets you play with

geometry & graphs to make pictures

of your cat, friend, or action figure

perform some cool moves.

What is Choreo Graph?

Choreo Graph was inspired by dance and movement

We developed a tool that

allows students to explore

the deep mathematics

that is involved in

choreographing the motion

of things kids care about.

Rotations, Translations & Coordinates

In the app, you’re playing with angles, translations (sliding

a part from one spot to another), and coordinate grids.

The graphs are mathematical models for the way motion

changes throughout your animation.

Rotations, Translations & Coordinates(Believe it or not, you’re doing math)

Sample Activity: The Symmetrical Dance Challenge

Create a dance

Express symmetry in

the movements of your

dancer.

TELL THE STORY is covered later in this tutorial.

To get started, tap:

Build Your Dancer

You will be

prompted to take

a picture.

Then, choose one picture from the scroll.

Build Your Dancer

You can begin to

digitally cut out the

parts of your

dancer that you

would like to make

move.

Trace carefully with your finger− you can pinch out to

zoom in and improve precision. If satisfied, tap the check

mark, or click the X and discard what you’ve done.

Build Your Dancer

This will let you access, share, or work on it again

later.

Build Your Dancer

Name and save

your scene.

Build Your Dancer

You can now

select a photo to

trace your next

part.

It could be the same photo or mix in a different one.

Repeat the BUILD process by

tracing and saving parts.

Animate

Your Dancer

Once you have all the parts you want for your

dancer, you are ready to make your dancer move

on the ANIMATE stage.

The line graph shows how the selected part

changes through time. You can set the angle at

moments in the animation represented by nodes

in the graph.

Animate

Your Dancer

using the Graph

Controller

Each part you

create has a

Graph

Controller that

controls how

your dancer

moves.

Animate

Your Dancer

Stretch a node of the line graph up or down to set

the part’s angle of rotation at that moment of the

animation.

Animate

Your Dancer

using Angles

This will show you all the angles of rotation that you

have applied to your dancer. (Angles are also displayed

on the graphs above).

Tap the wrench

and TOGGLE on

ANGLES

Animate

Your Dancer

using Angles

Notice at the

same moment in

each graph, one

angle is 75° and

the other is -75°.

Paying close attention to these angle measurements

can be helpful in creating symmetry.

Animate

Your Dancer

using

Translation

Tap the wrench

and TOGGLE on

TRANSLATION.

This will show

the path your

dancer travels.

To add translations to your dance, select the part

you want to move and then choose a node on its

line graph. Drag the part to a new position on the

stage.

Animate

Your Dancer

using

Translation

You can set the location of your dancer for each

node of the line graph.

Animate

Your Dancer

using the Grid

Tap the wrench

and TOGGLE on

GRID.

The GRID will display the coordinates of each part at

any given point in your animated dance sequence.

Animate

Your Dancer

Helpful Hint:

COPY or CLEAR

all rotation

values by

holding down

a highlighted

line graph

Copying allows you to paste those values into another

line graph, resulting in the other part replicating

the movement.

Animate

Your Dancer

Looking at the two graphs allows you to easily

manipulate the values so that they are opposites,

and thereby symmetrical.

There you have it…

A SymmetricalDance!

Share Your Dance

Choreo Graph will automatically save your project, but

you can save a video to your camera roll that you can

share over email or on other social platforms.

Tell the Story

Choreo Graph also allows students to create a multi-media

reflection report about their projects in TELL THE STORY.

Tap:

Create a

Reflection

Report

Tap “+” to create a new report or tap on a report

you’ve already made to access it, edit it, or share it.

Create a Report

You are given a

few template

options.

Blank allows you to customize your reflection.

Create a Report

In this template,

notice that you

can edit the title

and subtitle.

Then, start adding media and/or text with different

layout options.

Create a Report

Here we chose

to add the video

of our Symmetry

Dance.

Tapping the “+” allows you to continue adding

text and media.

Create a Report

Adding

screenshots and

text is a great

way to reflect on

what you made

and the math

you have used in

Choreo Graph.

Teachers are invited to scaffold the reflection as they

see fit by offering students suggestions for what to

include.

Create a Report

Once the

reflection report

is complete

and you have

effectively

told the story,

you have the

option to

share to our

Teaching Hub.

Visit noticing.nysci.org/resources for ways to share work.

The possibilities for making

things move and exploring math

at the same time are endless.

Additional Features and Help

Music

To enhance your

animations, add

some music to

the mix.

Back on the BUILD stage there are a few musical

options to choose from.

Props and People

Another option

on the BUILD

stage is PROPS

and PEOPLE.

These are pre-traced pieces that can make it

easier to get started with Choreo Graph.

Help

For extra help

while in the app,

tap the “?”.

You will see highlighted help information

as shown.

We hope you have a lot of fun with Choreo Graph, and learn

some things about rotations, translations, graphs, and

coordinate grids in the process.

Resources Thanks very much for checking

out the tutorial.

More Noticing Tools from NYSCI

Size Wise lets you explore ratios and proportions while making funny

pictures that make things seem wildly larger or smaller than they really

are.

Volumize lets you explore surface area and volume as you take 2D

photos of things in the world and make them 3-dimensional.

Fraction Mash allows you to explore fractions while creating crazy

photo mashups.

Playground Physics allows you to uncover and analyze the physics in

what you do.
