Louis Antoine de Bougainville

• set up settlement on Falkland Islands• Also claimed Tahiti

• Brought two important people with him:1. A naturalist – classified the plants and

animals they discovered2. An astronomer – work out new ways to

determine longitude

• Believed in concept of “noble savage”– Claimed that humans are born good and are then

corrupted by civilization

ENGLISH EXPLORERS

James Cook

• Most famous explorer of the Pacific• Went on three voyages1. Sailed around Australia2. Sailed north between Alaska and Russia3. Sailed south of the Pacific Islands

• He and his crew were the first to sail completely around Antarctica

• Discovered the Hawaiian Islands• Treated the native people fairly and

generously
