Where do bats live?

• Bats live in caves, attics, and hollow trees.

Why are bats good?

• Most U.S. bats eat insects. A single bat can eat up to 1,200 mosquitoes in one hour. Some bats in the Southwestern U.S. also pollinate plants like the big saguaro cactus while drinking nectar.

What do Bats eat?

• 70% of bats consume insects. There are also fruit-eating bats; nectar-eating bats; carnivorous bats that prey on small mammals, birds, lizards and frogs; fish-eating bats; and the blood-sucking vampire bats of South America.

Bat Facts

• Bats look like 3 inch hairy black things with wings and long ears.

• Bats move by flying, and gliding.

• The bat eats beetles, crickets, and flying insects.

• The bat eats by making echoes. When the echo hits food it goes back to the bat. Now it knows where to get food.

How do bats reproduce?

• Gestation 40 days - 6 months (bigger bats have longer gestation periods)

• Litter Size Mostly one pupFor their size, bats are the slowest reproducing mammals on Earth.  At birth, a pup weighs up to 25 percent of its mother’s body weight, which is like a human mother giving birth to a 31 pound baby!  Offspring typically are cared for in maternity colonies, where females congregate to bear and raise the young. Male bats do not

help to raise the pups.

What are the threats to bats?

• The greatest threat to bats is people. Habitat destruction and fear are a lethal combination for bats. In some areas, people have even been known to set fires in caves, killing thousands of roosting bats.

• The bats enemies are: Owls, snakes, and humans.

• Bats protect themselves by camouflaging with its dark habitat .
