ADJECTIVES

Adjectives

One of the best ways to expand sentences is to use adjectives, which can add interest to your writing.

Adjectives modify nouns or pronouns by describing or adding information about them.

Examples

My beautiful mother never goes outside without makeup.

The green meadow is always restful on the eyes.

Adjectives

Adjectives might also be connected to a noun through a linking verb.

The car is red.

Adjectives

Adjectives may also show comparisons between things. When comparing two things, add –er or more to the adjective. When comparing three or more things, add –est or most.

This car is larger than the one I owned before.This car is the largest one I have ever owned.This car is more unusual than my other one.This car is the most unusual one on campus.

Adverbs

Adverbs are another useful way to expand sentences.

Adverbs modify verbs, adjectives, or other adverbs by describing or adding information about them.

Adverbs usually answer the questions how, when, where, why, or how often.

Many adverbs end in –ly, such as slowly, noisily, and loudly.

Examples:

My favorite music is never played on the radio.

The children played joyfully.My wife heartily ate the

dinner I made.
