1st degree

• Effects only the first layer of skin (epidermis)

• Characterized by redness and swelling

• Slight pain only in the burned area

First Degree

2nd degree

• Effects both the outer and underlying layer of skin (epidermis and dermis)

• Characterized by redness, swelling, and blistering

• Pain level fluctuates depending on the nerve damage

2nd Degree

3rd degree

• Effects the deeper layers of skin

• Characterized by charring, hard, leather like eschars

• Often painless due to deadened nerves

3rd Degree

Treatments

DO…• Remove source• Remove clothing• Apply cool water• Cover with a sterile

bandage• Seek medical

attention if necessary

DO NOT…• Remain in contact

with the source• Apply butter• Apply ice or cold water• Break blisters• Remove burnt skin
