This is the last newsletter for the term. Students on work
placement have been going very well from all reports. On
completion of this exam block, our students and staff can
enjoy a well-deserved break. A great deal always happens
in Term 3 at St Patrick’s College and this year has been no
exception. It has been good to see the high level of student
engagement. I know a number of students will also be
involved in the St Patrick’s music ministry coming up this
Sunday night.
Retreats
Year 11 students will have their camp and Year 12 students will have retreat in the
first week of term. Students always get a lot out of these days. As mentioned in
the letter sent to Year 12 parents, it is a school expectation that all students attend
retreats.
Child Protection Week
Last week was officially Child Protection Week. St Patrick’s College confirms its
commitment and strength in keeping all our community members safe, especially
our students.
RU OK? Day
Last week we also recognised RU Ok? Day at the College. Thank you to Mrs Tracey
Duthler (College Counsellor) and Mr Brendon Brauer (Acting Assistant Principal –
Student Welfare) for organising our College activities. I would also like to
acknowledge the Headspace Mackay members who attended during the lunch break
and mixed with our students to help promote the service and support available
through Headspace Mackay.
Mercy College Golden Jubilee Celebrations
On Wednesday 6 September, our College leaders and myself attended the Mercy
College Mackay Golden Jubilee celebrations and the opening of the Catherine
McAuley Resource Centre. Original students of the class of 1968 and the Sisters
of Mercy also attended this ceremony. Thank you to Mercy College for a lovely
morning and congratulations of achieving this special milestone.
Staff Change and Farewells
We farewell Mrs Sarah Rozekrans on Friday as she goes on maternity leave and
welcome Mr Marcus McConnell next term as her replacement. We wish Mrs
Rozekrans and her husband Dennis our best wishes as they prepare for the birth
of their first child.
Leaving St Patrick’s College this term is Andrew Sunderland (Teacher’s Assistant in
the VET subject area) and Kirsten Larsen (Library Assistant). We wish both Andrew
and Kirsten all the best for the future.

Centre for Multicultural Youth
Multicultural young people make up at least one-quarter of all Australian youth, but very little is known about their needs. MY
Australia is a national research partnership between nine organisations, including CMY, to address this gap.
MY Australia is asking young people from migrant and refugee backgrounds to take part in the first ever multicultural youth
census. Please click on the previous link to take you to the survey and for your chance to enter the prize draw by completing
the survey.
St Patrick’s Family
The Young Endeavour Youth Scheme (expand your horizons) Programme has selected St Patrick’s College Year 11
student Tyra-Lee Barry to sail on the Young Endeavour. Congratulations Tyra-Lee!
Congratulations to Lauren Bella who has been named in the 2017 NAB Australian Football League Women’s U18 All
Australian Team. Well done Lauren.
Year 11 Camp
First week next term (Wednesday 4 to Friday 6 October), the students in Year 11 will attend a
camp retreat at Yeppoon as part of their (although belated – Thank you Cyclone Debbie) induction
to St Patrick’s College. Our focus for this retreat will be three fold – Positive Identity, Servant
Leadership and building a Shared Community.
The intention is that students will engage in a number of tasks and activities that will encourage
them to respect each other’s personal identity and develop authentic relationships in the group.
This will assist the students to cope with the excitement and pressure of Year 12 in 2018.
We will be joined by Az Hamilton, from the Just Motivation Team (Brisbane), who will
lead some of the sessions around developing our identity. The Year 11 students of 2016
really enjoyed Az’s presentations last year, so we look forward to him sharing his energy
and enthusiasm with us again this year.
I would encourage all students attending the retreat to come with an open mind and be
prepared to join in the fun. Students will always get more out of these events than they
expect, but they must leave their negativity behind and support each other.
Year 12 Retreat
During the final stages of the Year 12 retreat last year, I heard a number of students say,
“why didn’t we do this sooner?”. So many of the Year 12 students find the retreat with
Michael Fitzpatrick a real mind opening experience, which opens their eyes to the people
around them with whom they have be sharing the same classrooms for many years (in
some cases 12 years). It is such an awesome feeling to see the growth in the students over
the two days.
I have had the pleasure of witnessing Michael Fitzpatrick lead students through a number of retreats for many years. Not
only does he lead the students well, but he is a genuine good bloke, whom the students really warm to. Michael Fitzpatrick
will lead the retreat again this year in the St Patrick’s Hall, students should be aware of the following details:
The retreat on the 5/6 October is compulsory
Venue: St Patrick’s Hall
It will be run by Michael Fitzpatrick
It is a two day retreat being held at school in normal school time
Students are to wear non-uniform; appropriate casual clothes (thongs are not allowed)
Please bring a cushion to sit on
Bring some pens
Normal school tuckshop will be available for lunches

R U OK? Day
On Friday September 1, the College recognised the importance of R U OK? Day and how we as a
community can support those who are struggling. Representatives from Headspace Mackay attended the
College during lunchtime to inform students of the services and support that they provide to young
people to help them get their lives back on track. Our College Counsellor works closely with Headspace
to assist our students with promoting their wellbeing. This can relate to mental health, physical health,
work and study support and alcohol and other drug services. As part of our awareness, a lunchtime
concert was held to assist in creating a relaxed atmosphere for our students. With QCS out of the way
and the exam block around the corner, the R U OK Day? provided the perfect opportunity to recharge the batteries,
connect with friends and reduce stress and anxiety. Thank you to Mrs Rozekrans organising the lunchtime entertainment
and the Pastoral Care team for assisting with the organisation of this day.
“Staying connected and having meaningful conversations is something we can all do. You don't need to be an expert - just
a great mate and a good listener. So, if you notice someone who might be struggling - start a conversation.” (R U OK?,
2017)
The following four simple steps were a big focus of our R U OK? Day at St Patrick’s.
1. Ask R U OK?
2. Listen without judgement
3. Encourage Action
4. Check in. Stay in touch and be there for them
This month on SchoolTV - Impact of Gambling
Children and teenagers are particularly vulnerable to marketing tactics and this is greatly concerning. Research shows that
children as young as eight, are able to easily recall the marketing for sports betting. It is having a major impact on the way
in which young people think about the relationship between gambling and sport. The 'normalisation' of sports betting is
posing a threat to Australian teenagers.
Children are also being inadvertently exposed to simulated gambling and gambling sites through mobile devices. With video
games being extremely popular, this has the potential to blur the boundary between video gaming and gambling. Research
suggests that more than 40 per cent of young people, who have an interest in video games with gambling-like features, will
also have a preoccupation with gambling or intend to gamble in the future.
A study conducted by the Australian Council for Educational Research, found that up to five per cent of young people in
Australia will develop gambling problems before the age of 25.
We hope you take time to reflect on the information offered in this month’s edition and we always welcome your feedback.
If you have any concerns about your child, please contact the school counsellor, Tracey Duthler for further information.

The Australian Air Force visited St Patrick’s College on Wednesday 30 August with their flight simulator.
Aerospace Studies students were given the opportunity to fly a Super Hornet in the highly professional
simulator. They were also given lessons on aviation, experienced air traffic control and used virtual
reality headsets. The Air Force has been involved in this program for a couple of years now and aims
to expand the program further in future years. Their aim is to increase interest in the Air Force and to
attract quality recruits. Students enjoyed the experience and gained valuable knowledge. We could like
to thank the Australian Air Force for suppling instructors and offering this unique opportunity to the
students of St Patrick’s College.

Last week the Aquatic Practices students went on a full day fishing excursion to the mouth of Bakers
Creek. Students enjoyed a fantastic day being assessed outside the classroom as part of their practical
assessment component of studies.
Year 12 Geography are currently studying Climate Change and its impacts on the Great Barrier Reef. To
better communicate this to the general public here are some comic strips students have created:

Having beaten Mackay North State High School 8 – 2 earlier in the season, the boys thought the grand
final would be an easy affair, this was certainly not the case.
We would have had at least 70% of the possession of the ball, but could we score. Shot after shot found
the goal keeper. The only goal we did score was our own goal half way through the first half, so at half
time, it was one nil to Mackay North State High School.
The second half was much the same and with twenty minutes to go, North scored again, through a
superb goal going into the St Patrick’s net, high and wide into the right hand corner.
A few inspired substitutions from the coach saw St Pat’s finally score
three goals, the last goal coming in the final two minutes of the game.
So the final score was 3-2 to the St Pat’s boys!
The lesson to be learnt here was not to underestimate the
opposition, especially in a grand final. All done to all members of the
team: Toby Coleman; Joshua Holder; Tyrese Davids; Riley Stansbie;
Lucas Tomerini; Benjamin Weston; Rhys Cappello; Jackson Hey;
Adam Williams; Jackson Stansbie; Zahn Selmer; Isaac Bell; Caleb
Galea; Makhaya Quakawoot; Bayley Sharp and Alex Bovero.
The St Patrick’s Girls Rugby League team has been involved in the Mackay Schoolgirls Competition over
the last six weeks. During this competition, the girls have played eight round robin games and finished
undefeated. Last Friday saw the girls take on Mackay State High School (MSHS) in the grand-final. The
girls put on a brave effort against a team who were determined to win, however, our tenacity and hard
work were enough to see us maintain our lead. St Pat’s winning the Deanna Turner Cup (Year 11-12) by
defeating MSHS 14:10.
Try Scorers: Katie Muscat (2) and Chloe Wright (1)
Conversions: Emma Manzelmann (1)
Player of the final: Emma Manzelmann
It has been amazing to see such a high level of participation from a squad
exceeding 25 players. Congratulations to all girls who have contributed to
this win!
Twenty four students represented St Patrick’s College at the Great Northern Clean up. The students
cleaned up the area of Riverside Drive, in the Cremorne area. Organisers were very impressed with our
effort as due to our large number of participants, areas never cleaned before were tidied. Student’s work
ethic and behaviour were exceptional. Thank you to all students that volunteered!
