EPDS CAN BE DECEIVING EPDs can be deceiving, so don’t put all your trust in them. Some cows have milk EPDs of 0 or minus a few pounds and always raise a 700-800 lbs calf and others are plus 20 and wean a 500 lbs calf. Some that have a birth EPD of 1 and have a 100 lbs calf and another that has a +5 and has a 75 lbs calf consistantly, so then there is something lacking in the system. I got the Maine Anjou Association to put the birth weights and weaing weights on their registration papers and the Simmental Association has always done this. I tried to get the Angus Board of Directors to put these birth weights and weaning weights on their registration papers, and they just laughed at me because YOU NEVER SEE A BAD ANGUS EPD, and there are some bad Angus cattle. That is why this numbers game is deceiving. At the Denver Stockshow I walked through the Simmental Pen bulls. On the stall cards they only had the EPDs and not any individual information. I TOLD THEM I WANT TO SEE THE BIRTH WEIGHTS, WEANING WEIGHTS AND YEARLING WEIGHTS on each individual. This has a lot more meaning to me. I made a steer out of a bull listed below and he is a PERFECT EXAMPLE OF WHAT I AM TALKING ABOUT. He was the poorest gainer of any bull we had one year, and yet his EPD numbers are about the best of the Simmentals.
J247 PB Simmental - BD 2/5/99, BW 96, WW 535, YW 900, TG: 2.28; WDA: 2.26
EPDs: BW: 1.9, WW: 41; YW: 64, MM: 4.
If his EPDs matched his performance I would estimate them at: BW: 4, WW: 10, YW: 15, MM: -12.
Maine Anjou and Simmental EPDs are a lot lower than Angus because they started out with a lot lower base. So it is very deceiving when comparing these breeds with Angus. EPDs are a tool in selection, but they shouldn’t be the only tool used. They should be used with discretion, especially with younger cattle. Often an animal that looks good
UNDERSTANDING EPDSEPDs - What does the E, the P and the D stand for? Expected Progeny Difference. It is how the progeny of an animal will do when compared to the progeny of another in pound difference.EPDs - What Are They?EPDs are a numerical comparison of all animals within a certain breed that have records recorded. EPDs compare the record of the individual and his ancestors against all other individuals in that breed.EPDs - Why Use Them?EPDs allow comparisons of individuals against all other cattle on different ranches and different locations and management systems.EPDs - Where Do They Come From?EPDs are an estimate of an animal’s future progeny performance based on the individuals own record and its ancestors as compared to breed
expressed in actual pounds (+ or -) of breed average (0) from the base year, 1991.
We have always concentrated on producing a functional, balanced, all purpose beef animal. One that is thick
expect her to stay fat while raising a 700 lb. calf. We believe in a balance between performance, eye appeal, and maternal traits. Above all, we have eliminated the problem cattle. To achieve balance, ranchers need cattle that are not necessarily the tops in all traits, but they can’t be weak in one single trait.
BALANCE
PAP SCORESBrisket Disease of cattle is the result of right congestive heart
oxygen pressures present when cattle are kept at high altitudes above 7,000 ft. elevation. The test is a measure of the pulmonary artery pressure (PAP). It is conducted by inserting a large gauge
that goes to the lungs.
Our bulls are not pampered and are not overly fat. They are developed on high roughage rations for comparison only and not for maximum gain. You will not be paying for over
bulls, you can be assured they will be sound, athletic, and ready to service cows. They are grown in big lots where they get lots of exercise, so they can take the toughest ranges.
IMPORTANT TRAITS TO LOOK FOR WHEN SELECTING YOUR BULL
IF YOU RUN BELOW 7,000 FEET ELEVATION, PAP SCORES SHOULD NOT BE CONSIDERED WHEN SELECTING BULLS.
Dr. Tim Holt of Colorado State University is the countries greatest authority on this disease and has tested many
thousands of cattle. Dr. Holt recommends that bulls selected for cow herds running above 7,000 feet have PAP Scores of
less than 41 if tested as yearlings. 41-45 is an acceptable score for animals tested over 16 months of age.

The beef industry has accepted Simmental as the “continental breed of choice” and has once again remembered that there is only one FREE GIFT that the Lord above has given to the industry and that gift is heterosis or “hybrid
vigor.” Each year we strive to raise the bar and produce a set of bulls that exceeds our previous offering. As you take the time to walk through the bull pens, you’ll visualize a consistent quality set of bulls in all three breeds. The Angus Association has done a tremendous job at marketing their product and creating a demand for quality beef. The base to create a crossbreeding system around the Angus breed is second to none with a great deal of advantages.
We receive many sale catalogs from programs across the nation as I am sure many of you do. As one studies the literature the force towards single trait selection is an area for concern. Carcass data has increased in leaps and bounds
off paper alone and visual analysis is left out of the equation a dead end road is not far off. We spend a great deal of time traveling around the country each year, mainly to look at cattle. There are great programs across the country each with different selection criteria’s and goals. I’ve witnessed both ends of the spectrum in the Angus breed. There are cattle that look great on paper yet when you step out in the corral they lack natural thickness, depth and bone that is needed to withstand the rigors of breeding cows in a range like environment. As seed stock producers we strive to select individuals that will work in our customers programs. “We have really worked to try and keep the natural thickness, square tops,

Calving heifers. We calve from 100-200 heifers every year and we always watch them closely.
We always try to breed them to an easy calving bull. However, I don’t care how much of a calving ease bull you buy, if you want a live calf you have got to get up at 2:00 in the morning. We check our heifers every 4 hours. IF YOU GET THEM TO FAT OR TO THIN YOU ARE ALSO GOING TO HAVE TROUBLES. We like to not feed them
over 1/3 alfalfa and they need some exercise. They need a little protein or the calves will be born weak and are a lot more susceptible to scours. But too much protein makes the calves bigger. All females should be watched closely during calving. You can’t predict whether any virgin bull will be a heifer bull until he’s sired a crop of calves. THE BEST WAY TO AVOID CALVING PROBLEMS IS TO EXPECT YOU WILL HAVE THEM.

We live in an area where we still embrace the heritage of the Old West. Our livestock culture still survives where the valley and sagebrush lie in the shadows of majestic mountains under endless sky…. where the solitude is not loneliness but a refreshing peace from the modern world. Our cattle summer on the Cedar Mountain and trail from Asay Creek to the high country over a two day period and over twenty
miles. They spend the summer months calling John L Valley, Sydney Valley, Tippets Vally, and Under the Mountain home. When fall hits and it starts to get cold the cattle start to drift back home and down into Asay Creek. The majority of the cattle will trail home on thier own, although some of them love the high country a bit too much and have thier own little honey holes that they set up camp. They have to be found and headed towards lower ground. Pictured here are cattle as they trail through the “blue gate” down to John L Valley and start the long progression back to the ranch. At Asay Creek the calves are weaned, and cattle are preg checked and vaccinated. The cattle will stay in the ranch on fall feed until cold weather and snow comes usaully towards the last part of December. From here they are moved to our winter range on the west desert where they will calve. It’s 120 miles between our summer and winter allotments.

ecember is one month that slows down just a bit and we took the chance to go visit family
and our great friends the Avila!s from California. We had arrived in Paso Robles California and
of Avila!s home. We got a call from Pam at the vet clinic from home that she was pretty sure that our little dog Roxy had been hit and was along the road. We called the Jose and Josue, we were all crying two states away and no way to get home. They both went out and searched the roads, found our little dog, and buried her in the cold frozen ground. They both had better things to do, cattle to be fed and tended, it had been record setting cold and digging a grave couldn!t have been easy. They aren!t just hired men they are about like family. They bend over backwards to make sure that everything run!s properly. They put up with us girls, the drama of love lives, and the everyday giggles and teasing. We depend on them for our operation to be a success. They notice droopy eared calves, and you can be guaranteed that they!ll be doctored.
nothing undone and work long late hours to make sure our program is a success. Thank you Jose Guzeman and Josue Garcia!

ove is the very essence of life. It is the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. Yet it is not found only at the end of the rainbow. Love is at the begin-ning also, and from it springs the beauty that arched across the sky on a stormy day. Love is the security for which children weep, the yearning of youth, the adhesive that binds marriage, and the lubricant that prevents devastating friction in the home; it is the peace of old age, the sunlight
of hope shining through death. How rich are those who enjoy it in their associations with family, friends, and neighbors! Love, like faith, is a gift of God. It is also the most enduring and most powerful virtue.”

ANGUS REG # 1624811 Sire: OCC Doctor Dam: Miss Yardley N181 by Xplorer by Krugerand 490 Great cattle come from great cow families and Yardley Skipper
hails from one of the best. His maternal sister sold in our Focus on
Wayne and Barb Ohlrichs were the contending bidder and went on
miss cow. You’ll see from the feature lots in this sale that Skipper is following the tradition of the cow family behind him. He is functional and stout with the bone and body that you seldom see in PB Angus. He has been an extremely consistent producer of quality.

ANGUS Sire: OCC Jet StreamDam: Miss Yardley R192 by SC Stockman
OCC Jet Stream is now deceased, he stands as one of Ohlde’s greatest
to clean up all our Angus heifers this past year. He’s the type of bull that will add belly, rib, and do-ablity, without taking pounds away from your bottom line.
