Wonder why you Tan?

• Basal Layer- special cells called melanocytes– Produce black

pigment called Melanin

– Sun exposure increases the rate of melanin production resulting in a tan

Different Pigmentations

• Albino- marked deficiency of pigmentation

Why do we Sweat?

• Two Important Glands– First Gland

Sudoriferous (sweat)• Produces sweat

through the pores, plentiful on palms, soles, forehead, and armpits

• Main function to cool the body, excrete waste, and moisten cells

Why do we get Acne?

• Second Gland – Sebaceous (oil)

gland– Yield an oily

secretion called sebum

– Sebum helps destroy harmful organisms on skin

– Blocked ductules lead to sebum build up and acne

Loss of hair?

• The bottom of the hair follicle is covered in papilla

• The papilla reproduces and is responsible for formation of hair

• Hair loss occurs from death of papillae

Hair Color

• Melanocytes found at the base of the hair follicle– Melanocytes

produce melanin which ranges in color from yellow to reddish brown to black

– Varying amounts of melanin produce ranging colors of hair
