October-November Sampler of the Month from Wendy Peatross of From My Heart Needleart
2020 October 1
Thank you, Wendy, for giving The Attic the privilege of displaying your beautiful model for our October-November Sampler of the Month. The photos do not do justice to this exquisite floral needlework. I wish that each of you could visit the shop to see it. The tiny rosebud border has been great fun to stitch! Now I can’t wait to get to the other florals!
Here is what Wendy tells us about this reproduction in the chart: This piece is a reproduction of a late 1800’s piece I have in my sampler collection. It is full of colorful roses, violets, and fuchsia, all surrounded by a lovely rosebud border. There are no specialty stitches on this sampler, and just a very small amount of back-stitch.
I have included an adaptation I designed and finished as a needlebook. It could also be finished as a drum. On the needle book alphabet I chose to highlight the initials of my grandchildren. You may choose to highlight special initials or stitch them all in one color.

Postponed Until Further Notice
I’m sorry to announce that the November workshops with Betsy Morgan and Jackie du Plessis have been cancelled. Betsy is retiring at the end of this year to spend time with her new grandson, and Jackie’s classes have been postponed until November 2021. Thank you for your understanding.
Customer Appreciation Stitch-In Due to the pandemic, these popular gatherings every Thursday had to be postponed indefinitely. When they are able to be resumed, with limitations in place from the Governor on numbers, they will be by invitation-only, as a reward and a very sincere thank-you to those of you who have supported us during these very difficult past six months. We have always appreciated your patronage, but your support during this difficult time for all small businesses, when we really needed you, has meant more than I can ever express.

Claudia Dutcher Kistler of Dutch Treat Designs and Vickie LoPiccolo Jennett & Maegan Jennett of NeedleWorkPress, invite you to join them for a fun and most interesting weekend featuring some incredible antique samplers and other needlework, presented by Attic Needlework at Mesa’s Hyatt Place. You will learn the stories behind the variety of samplers the orphans stitched in Bristol and how perforated paper helped them learn to stitch.
Weekend Events & Projects * Presentations from Vickie and Claudia featuring projects stitched on perforated paper that the orphans might have stitched. * Lecture on the history of Bristol samplers featuring incredible antique Bristol samplers from Claudia’s collection.
* All Bristol samplers were hem-stitched first, and so Maegan will teach us, or refresh our memories, on how to hem-stitch so that we can begin to stitch our Bristol sampler.
* Paper lacework name tag & friendship needle book adapted from a piece the orphans stitched.
* Bristol 101, an exclusive class sampler. * Two unreleased Bristol reproduction sampler charts, Bristol Red & Bristol Green * Small-count perforated paper project by NeedleWorkPress

September Update
Hello everyone! Just a quick update on my progress on
Miss Elizabeth Cotton. I
have been working my way through the second part of the verse. I have just a couple
of rows of the verse that are worked over one to do but have been breaking that up
by doing some work on the row of motifs across the bottom of the sampler along
with filling in the satin stitch across the middle band.
Stay safe, be well, and happy stitching! I look forward to seeing your progress
pictures.

There is even a special spot to personalize with your initials and the year!
On January 1st 2021 we will start the Martha Dawson Sampler! Krista Gramer will be leading the stitch along with all who wish to join in the fun! AND Hands Across the Sea Samplers has generously offered a special draw of an 1881 antique sampler along with a runner-up draw of a £50 Hands Across the Sea Samplers gift voucher at the end of the year 2021. All those who complete the Martha Dawson Sampler will be eligible for the draw! See details for more info! Miss Martha Dawson is such a sweet sampler with a beautiful pink rosebud border, a great red house surrounded by flowers and birds. Such an array of colors that work so well together. Many sweet motifs including lions, dogs, apple tree, and swans.
Design and materials info! The Martha Dawson sampler is 264 x 276 using cross stitch over two linen threads with the verse and dedication stitched over one linen thread. There is also an adaptation of the verse and dedication for over two which makes the sampler suitable for stitching on aida, Linaida or linen. Perhaps it may give you the chance to try some over one stitching if you haven’t done so before. It’s wonderfully-sized sampler to stitch on a bit every month while enjoying other projects too.
The super colorful and cheerful antique sampler from 1881, Alice Williams, a very early example of a sampler done in variegated wool, will be the first draw for those who complete their Martha Dawson sampler. A big THANK YOU to Nicola Parkman and Hands Across the Sea Samplers for their generosity and contribution to the SAL.
The sampler is charted with AVAS Soie d’Alger silk with both 100/3 silk and DMC conversions ,so you have many choices of fabric count that will work depending on your preference. Lakeside linen in Pearled Barley is recommended per the chart. Please contact Hands Across the Sea Samplers or your favorite needlework shop for the pdf chart download and supplies! Your needlework supplier can help you choose the perfect linen/aida and threads for your Martha Dawson sampler.

ANNA SOPHIA BIRCHAM 1871, a Norfolk sampler, is truly an exquisite reproduction with something for everyone. The chart includes interesting and in-depth information about Anna Sophia, which always makes one feel such kinship with the original sampler maker, don’t you agree? Lovely flowers, a bee skep, an exquisite border, that looks like it wouldn’t be boring to stitch, stunning birds, all embroidered in beautiful silks. Downloadable PDF, $24, available from either Nicola’s website, or get it from The Attic when you order your linens and silks.

GRACE STEWART $19, 204 x 177 ~ Melinda Cole, the reproductionist, tells us this about Grace’s sampler: Although I am unable to locate Grace's genealogy, she was undoubtedly stitched during the first quarter of the 19th century. Only two samplers have been located with this unusual red and blue building. Both were worked by girls born in Perth, Scotland around 1800 and are in private collections.
SAMPLER ROLL $14, 194 x 71 ~ model stitched on 40ct Weeks Confederate Gray linen with Weeks threads; finished size of the roll is 14 1/2 inches long including tied ends. I was smitten the first time I saw this … and couldn’t wait to get my hands on it and stitch it! Isn’t it charming?! Clockwise from the right: * NIGHTSHADE BIRD $12,
183 x 58 ~ Here’s what Paulette tells us about her design: This drum takes its inspiration from the other tomato pieces I'm releasing with this auto. As you may know, tomatoes belong to the p l a n t f a m i l y k n o w n a s solanaceae, which translates to "the nightshade plant." The meaning of this isn't clear, from what I've read, but they could have been given this moniker bc some plants in this family bloom at night. Regardless, this drum was named for the black-and-pink bird carrying the cherry tomato vine!

Debbie tells us this about these lovely creations: The design is a combination. The huswife is from Blackbird's new book. the pocket with the girl is an adaptation from a "Sub Rosa" design, a Hungarian designer. I had stitched a sampler with this girl on it years ago for our daughter.
The quilted pieces are my own creation.... I pieced and quilted the fabric and then made the drawstring bag and the French Pouch. See what time at home can produce?

My apologies to the stitcher … I took this photo in June when our customer picked it up from Sandy’s framing studio, but I can’t remember who stitched it! This is the very beautiful LUCIANA DELGADO from NeedleWorkPress. I have always loved this sampler, and it reminds me to work on mine to try to finish it. Such a wonderful reproduction.

EpiloguePAGE34THE ATTIC
To Our Dear Customers ~First, thank you very much for your support, and your patience, during this unprecedented time in the world.
Who would have ever thought that the past six months would have brought us this?! Without you, The Attic would have become a fleeting memory. To go from a mostly in-store shop to almost completely a mail-order shop with a brick-and-mortar overhead has been difficult, to say the least, and my staff has responded unbelievably! But it has been very stressful for them. Some of the stress is avoidable. Some of the nastiness on the phone and in emails is really unfortunate, to put it kindly. My staff cares about The Attic, and you as our customers, as much as I do. And they take it personally when someone is unhappy. They try so very hard.
So, again I ask, please be kind. If you can’t be kind, I can recommend some other needlework shops where you can go. I can afford to lose an unhappy customer or two more than I can afford to lose my amazing staff. But what I can’t have happen is that I lose my staff. Without them these past many months, The Attic could not have continued to operate.
And it’s very hurtful when you leave the shop in a huff muttering under your breadth, “I hope you go out of business” … because we don’t have any more Lizzie Kate charts, never mind that she’s no longer in business for most of us, Sometimes you just have to laugh.
We’re so fortunate to have Cheri, left, and Aimee, right, working with us at The Attic. Cheri is in the shop on Saturdays when she’s not babysitting her grandson Monday-Friday, and Aimee works Tuesday-Friday and not on Saturday when she’s babysitt ing her grandchildren! If you’re stitching Jane Feddes in the Facebook SAL, then you already know Cheri, and if you’re a Flosstuber, you may have “met” Aimee on her Flosstube channel, known there as Mrs. Flossy.
Both of these ladies have been 4 additions to our Attic staff, and I know you will enjoy working with them.

An Open Letter to Our Customers
It’s been six months since the Covid pandemic reigned down on our world and we were forced to lock our doors and go from being a mostly brick and mortar storefront with some mail order to all mail order. To say the transition was difficult for us is putting it mildly. My staff has performed Herculean-like, putting in extra hours when necessary and often working under extreme duress with every day filled with more tasks than could possibly be accomplished, sometimes exacerbated by rude customers. Several factors, combined with the stresses of all of these combined circumstances, triggered the resignation of two of our staff. A week after the forced lockdown I had biopsy surgery, was diagnosed with recurrent ovarian cancer, began another chemo infusion regimen, and was required to play a reduced role in the shop. I am deeply indebted to my indomitable staff, who took up the reins and did all they could to keep The Attic going.
After a time we were able to be open by appointment to customers, and I am grateful to all of you who shopped with us during that time. I know it wasn’t as convenient as we all prefer, but it was helpful to us, and to you, I hope. Thankfully, the Covid numbers have continued to decrease in Arizona, and around the USA, and we are able to return to some regularity in our business. We are currently opening on Fridays and Saturdays without appointment, and as able, we will expand it from there. For framing consultations with Sandy, please continue to make an appointment as Sandy’s schedule is somewhat flexible, and appointments are preferred.
Some of you have asked when we will be open again for stitch-ins. We will make that announcement when it is possible. When we are, it will very likely be under a much different format than pre-Covid. Currently, due to continued limitations on the number of people per square foot, to allow for social distancing, we are required to make changes in that format. And what we are planning is a by-invitation time to stitch together. And invitations will go to those of you who have supported us during this very difficult past six months, as a reward and a heartfelt thank-you for continuing to support your LNS.
Financially, my husband and I had a choice to make: close the Attic or invest even more than we had when we initially purchased the shop. That was a very difficult decision. But I am not a quitter, and I wasn’t ready to give up. I’m confident that I will not live long enough to recoup that reinvestment.
That circumstance has made me very sensitive to the support of our customers. Some of you have not darkened our doors during this past six months or, if so, for a few threads you needed. But postings on social media for what you’ve purchased elsewhere have hurt, felt like a slap in the face, and do not comport with my definition of a “good customer.” So please understand when your invitation to stitch at The Attic isn’t forthcoming.
I am very happy to introduce our two newest Attic staff members ...
