Definition of Symbolism

“The practice of representing things by means of symbols or of attributing symbolic meanings or significance to objects, events or relationships” (Webster’s II New

College Dictionary, 2001).

• Symbolism in literature equates to words that create pictures for the reader.

• Single words can generate:– Images– Emotions– Moods.
