Covered wagons: a wooden wagon, generally 4 feet wide and 6 to 10 feet long. Thin wooden bands curved upward from each side of the wagon to support the canvas top. The wheels were high so the wagons could clear trees stumps on dry grounds and keep their contents dry when crossing riverbeds. Covered wagon were pulled by horses, oxen, or mules.

Activity

For the next three lessons we will be creating a covered wagon.

You will be given wax paper, craft sticks and liquid glue.

Write your name on your piece of wax paper and on one of the craft sticks.

Glue 4 craft sticks side by side and the 1 craft stick with their name on it across the 4 so it looks like 5 tally marks

Glue the remaining sticks together in groups in 2 for the sides of the wagon.

For the next three lessons we will be creating a covered wagon.

Day 2 of our Activity

You will glue the two sets of popsicle sticks to the base of the wagon. This will create a U-Shape

You might have to work as a team.

Tall Tales

A tall tale is a story about a person who is larger than life or bigger than someone could really be in real life. These stories involve a lot of exaggeration or hyperbole. This makes it very funny.

Activity

For the next three lessons we will be creating a covered wagon.

Day 3 of our Activity

You will use 3 pipe cleaners and paper

We have to cut the pipe cleaners in half

Twist 1 whole pipe cleaner and ½ pipe cleaner together to make 1 long piece

Glue the ends of the pipe cleaners to the inside of the craft stick wagon body at each end.

Hold until it sticks (this may take 30 seconds or longer)

Set aside
