Historical Perspective:
• Wellness Policy required for districts participating in the National School Lunch Program
• Based on Child Nutrition Reauthorization Act, 2004

• The Board recognizes the positive relationship between good nutrition, physical activity and the capacity of students to develop and learn.

1. School Based Nutrition Education Goals– Coordinated with health curriculum– Students take ownership and receive consistent
message
2. School Based Physical Activity Goals– All students participate daily in PE– In addition to PE, daily physical exercise is
encouraged

3. School Based Health and Wellness Activities– School events, field trips, athletic events, etc.
should consider LWP goals– Staff are encouraged to use wellness programs,
health screenings, etc. as a model for students

4. Cooperative Efforts to Promote Community Wellness– Schools should actively engage families: physical
activity beyond the school day, provide families with information/opportunities to learn about healthy eating, educate on current health related topics
– Provide access for students, families, or community to physical activity facilities

5. Nutrition Guidelines for Food Sold or Served on School Property– All food and beverage sold on school premises
will comply with federal and state laws– Schools should offer healthy food and beverage
choices
6. Monitoring and Evaluation– Each school shall organize a Wellness Committee– Reinforce guidelines set forth in LWP, report
progress yearly for Superintendent’s report.

Vision:
• To establish a District-wide philosophy for D200 that supports and promotes wellness, good nutrition, and an active lifestyle.
Why the need for revision ?
• Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010– Strengthens Local Wellness Policies (LWP) and
adds rules for public input, transparency, and implementation.
