July: The Theological Virtue of Hope—Reflections by Monique Sammut
“Hope is being able to see that there is light despite all of the darkness.” Desmond Tutu
Life is difficult, and sometimes, we become so focused on the hundreds of things that go wrong, that we forget to pay attention to the thousands of things that go right. If we only dwell on the negative, we begin to lose hope, believing that nothing will ever be right again.
Once, I was flying to visit a friend. Outside, it was cloudy, dark, and pouring rain, but once the plane rose above the clouds, the sun was shining brightly. That is Hope: believing that the darkness is not the end. The clouds will fade, peace will come, and God – just like the sun – is always there. He never leaves us alone – not for an instant. I leave you with part of a poem found on the wall of a cell in Auschwitz
“I believe through any trial,/there is always a way/But sometimes in this suffering/and hopeless despair/My heart cries for shelter,/to know someone’s there/But a voice rises within me, saying hold on/my child, I’ll give you strength,/I’ll give you hope. Just stay a little while./I believe in the sun/even when it is not shining/And I believe in love/even when there’s no one there/And I believe in God/even when He is silent./I believe through any trial/there is always a way.”
Please remember that as the public celebration of Masses resumes, those faithful
who are in at-risk groups, those who care for people in at-risk groups,
and those who have any symptoms of sickness at all are most strongly
encouraged not to go to Mass.
Bishop Jeffrey M. Monforton has dispensed Catholics residing in the Diocese of Steuben-
ville and other Catholics present in the Diocese of Steubenville from the
obligation to participate in Mass on Sundays and other holy days of obligation
at this time.
