I remember being in first grade
and making my mother a coffee
mug for Mother's Day at
school. It was made of plastic,
but I made a drawing on paper
that would then be placed on
the outside of the mug. I was
so excited about making it be-
cause in it there was a little bit
of myself. I didn't always be-
lieve my mother when she said that the best gifts I could give
her were things I made myself,
especially since even as a little
kid I knew some of the things I
created were not so wonderful.
But this mug was different. It
just seemed so cool and, of
course, my mother loved it.
Now she is long gone from this world, but the mug still re-
mains. It is mine now, resting
on a high shelf in our kitchen
cabinet. No one uses it, but I
know it is there. It reminds me
of her, but at the same time, it
was always a part of me. I gave
her a part of me, she cared for
it and loved it, and then it was
returned back to me. Now it is
a part of me, and a part of her
also.
We are each fearfully and won-
derfully made by God, and like
a child giving a part of himself
to his mother in his creation,
there is a little bit of the divine
in all of us. We are made in
God's image, and when he
looks out at his creation, he
knows us as his own. But you
and I will not walk this earthly
creation forever. For just like
the mug that came back to me,
we will return to our Creator.
We will join with God in an
eternal relationship where we
are made perfect so that we
may be in union with him for-
ever. Rejoice, for he has creat-ed you as special, has found
great delight in you, and you
are his own.

Father Gene Heerdink is one of the
most humble men I know. At the age
of 90 he is the senior Priest in our Dio-
cese. His service to others has exceed-
ed that of most of our brother Priests.
Father Gene has served the Parishes of
the Evansville Diocese in many ways.
Not only as the Associate or Pastor of several Parishes
but he has also been the Diocesan Director of Religious
Educa!on. More recently he has developed and di-
rected what is now the Office of Hispanic Ministry and
Guadalupe Center. Serving the people he grew to love
and respect with his two assignments to the Society of
Saint James. During these assignments, that he re-
quested, he spent years as a Missionary Priest in South
America. Last year Father Gene celebrated WTJW going live in Jasper. This was a 10 year journey to bring Catholic Radio to you, to us. While the Diocese shows Father Gene retiring in June of 2008 he has remained active and shows us the beauty of his Servants Heart. Join us Sunday, May 22 at 5:00 pm EDT as we celebrate his service at a reception in the Par-ish Center. May God continue to bless him in abundance.
Saint Joseph has been a leader in Catholic
educa!on in Southwest Indiana since 1842.

In this informa!ve talk, Dr. Sco"
Hahn explores some of the most im-
portant beliefs that dis!nguish Chris-
!anity from Islam. He explains that
while both religions trace themselves
back to Abraham, the differences,
including our understanding of God
as Father, are not insignificant. With
charity, balance, and candor, Dr.
Hahn shows us how Islam presents
the most formidable challenge to
Chris!anity in the Third millennium.

Is a monthly Prison Ministry Outreach program of Saint Jo-
seph Parish and is directed to persons in the Dubois County
Community Corrections Work Release Center. The program
is in its third year. Meetings are held on the last Wed. of the
month from 6:30—8:00pm. The program consists of an
opening prayer, a meal, followed by a Scripture reading and discussion, and closes
with a prayer. The meetings are open to anyone in the center by signing up for it on a
list provided by the center staff. The meal is obtained from the Community Meals
Program and are free of charge to all participants. Most of the attendees are not of our
Catholic faith; however that does not matter to us and we have found that most par-
ticipants are thankful, courteous and willing to engage in meaningful conversations
about the scripture reading and other matters of spirituality during these sessions.

The Most Holy Trinity
"The Spirit of truth... will take from
what is mine and declare it to you."
Jesus says in today's Gospel that the
Spirit declares something to US. We
actually have a kind of share in the
blessed life of the Trinity through
this spiritual declara!on. In par!cu-
lar, God gives us the gi= of his truth.
Tradi!onally, we say that God--the
Blessed Trinity--is the source of all
truth, beauty, and goodness. To-
day's reading reminds us that truth
exists, that it comes from God, and
that we can know it, hear it, and live
according to it. "But when he
comes, the Spirit of truth, he will
guide you to all truth."
This is so important to remember in
today's cultural climate. These days,
the very idea of truth is a touchy
subject. Because there is so much
focus on tolerance and not offend-
ing anyone, we tend to shy away
from discussions about "absolute"
truth. Instead, we hear a lot of talk
about "what's true for me" or
"what's true for you." Too o=en we
get confused about how to respect
others' differing beliefs while s!ll
maintaining our own. Instead of em-
bracing the fact that there is real
truth--like, for example, the truth
that God became man and was born
of Mary--it is more popular to refer
to "beliefs" and "tradi!ons" and
"prac!ces," emphasizing that these
things differ among people. Yes,
those things differ. But truth does
not change. Either Jesus is God, or
he isn't. Either his claims were true
or they weren't. It's not a ma"er of
personal opinion.
The Holy Spirit helps to convince us
of what is really right. But we need-
n't fear that this will lead us to be
intolerant. It is this same Spirit with-
in us that brings the fruits of love,
peace, pa!ence, kindness, and
generosity.
