Purpose of the Evening

By the end of the evening you should have:

1. An awareness of the curriculum and the potential qualifications that your child could achieve in the forthcoming 2 years.  2. An understanding of the new Assessment and Reporting systems at Park High School. 3. What you can expect from us and what we would encourage you to do.4. An appreciation of work experience.5. A student’s perspective. Getting it right.

GCSE mathematics

• much larger, more ‘challenging’ • more emphasis on solving problems that require multi‐step solutions. 

• new topics such as ratio and proportions. • expected to learn key mathematical formulae by heart. 

English Language and Literature

• expected to read ‘a wide range of texts’ • greater emphasis on accurate use of spelling, punctuation and grammar. 

• Unseen texts will be a new requirement in Literature

BTEC qualifications

• Have the same currency as GCSE’s• Allow for a modular and more linear pathway• Regular points of reference and deadlines to submit work throughout the course

• Level 2 courses, equivalent to 2 GCSE grades are available in all BTEC courses

• Pathway to further education is positive

New GCSE grades

New GCSEs• GCSEs to be graded from nine to one, replacing A*‐to‐G grades

• Grade 9 will be highest• The top three grades (9, 8 and 7) will replace the current top two (A* and A), with the top 20% of those being graded 9.

• Grade 5, equivalent to the current low B or high C  is regarded as a ‘good pass’ 

• Grade 4 will be equivalent to current low C grade• Grade 1 will be lowest

• Regular Contact Book Checks

• Discuss school – PCs & general – big change

• Open communication with school

• Promote good work ethic

• Clear space for h.l. and study away from distractions

• Ensure good diet and appropriate bed‐time 

• Limit the amount of time watching television, using mobile phone and computer games

• Encourage and reward the effort rather than focussing on the grade 

• Encourage your child to speak to their teachers whenever there is a subject problem

• Encourage your child to speak to their tutor whenever there is a problem or uncertainty

What I can do as a parent.

In 2014 – 2015 we achieved a whole school attendance figure of 96%.
