Rice PAIR’s Mission• To connect young refugees with Rice student

volunteers through educational programs that build positive mentoring relationships and empower refugee students to reach their highest potential.

Two Questions:1. Why refugee youth?2. Why college students?

Why the Rice PAIR volunteer experience is unique:

• Work with youth from all over the world and from some of the neediest areas of Houston

• Volunteer ownership of programs encouraged and essential!

• Develops strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills

• Requires strong commitment

Programs

• PAIR-Explore– Saturday afternoons, 2-4pm– Gulfton Neighborhood Centers, Inc.

• PAIR College Counseling– Monday and Thursday afternoons, 4:15-6pm– Westbury High School

• PAIR Mentoring and Tutoring– Monday – Thursday afternoons, 4-6pm– Fondren Middle School

• PAIR College Orientation Day

Commitment

• Commitment from our volunteers is required to ensure quality programming and strong mentoring relationships

• How big is the commitment?– We ask for volunteers to attend at least 8 of 10

sessions (one day per week) per semester.• Where do I sign the commitment?– Online at: bit.ly/fall2011PAIRcommitment

FAQ• Will you email this information to me?– Yes, if you are on any of our listservs.– Forms will be provided at training & planning

meetings and under “Get Involved” on www.pair.rice.edu

• Who do I give paperwork to?– Your program coordinator

• Is transportation provided?– Yes, we find volunteers/officers to provide rides

each week. Gas is reimbursed if you have a car and are willing to drive

New Volunteer Checklist1. Sign up for a program listserv during the break-out session

for updates2. Complete the PAIR volunteer commitment3. Complete a volunteer application4. Complete your background check

1. MT & CC volunteers: VIPS online registration for HISD schools + paper copy of your driver’s license

2. SS volunteers: Neighborhood Centers Inc. background check5. Attend your first program planning meeting6. Attend mandatory fall volunteer training - Wednesday,

Sept. 7, 7-9pm in SEW 3017. Attend sessions & have fun!

Returning Volunteer Checklist1. Complete the PAIR volunteer commitment2. Complete the 2011-2012 Liability Release3. Complete your background check
