For this months ‘Beat the
High Street Challenge’
we chose a woven pearl
necklace from Top Shop.
The High Street version was
made using plastic pearls
and chain. We decided
ours gave more punch,
combining sprayed glass
pearls with a large gold
‘Belcher’ chain. The pearls
are woven through each
link using Chinese Knotting
cord or ‘Shambala’ Cord.
For a playful summer look, try

Craft Wire Love Heart Bracelet & Earrings Dainty jewellery simple but elegant
01. Firstly, cut a piece of
wire approximately 4 inches
in length, and then gently
fold it in half so that it creates
a soft 45 degree angle.
02. Next, measure along
one leg between ½ inch
and 1 ½ inches then wrap
around the thickest part
of your round nose pliers
just over half way. Then do
the same on the other side
this will make the bare
bones of your heart shape.
03. Cut a separate piece
of wire approx 1 ½ inches
long and with your round
nose pliers coil wrap 2 full
loops, do this roughly half
way down your round nose
pliers because you need the
coil to be wide enough to go
over both legs of the heart.
04. Then angle it at a soft 90
degrees and thread the coil
over both legs of your heart.
05. Cut the excess of your
coiled wire to about 7cm and
loop it around your round
nose pliers, this will create
your link onto your next heart.
06. Trim the legs approx
4cm longer than the heart
itself, make sure they

cross over and are on the
same side of the heart
07. Then with your chain
nose pliers wind the excess
craft wire around the tip
tightly and to make a scroll
like shape. Do the same on
both sides; make sure each
faces the edges of your heart.
08. Make 11 more hearts
in exactly the same way
linking them with the
loop you’ve made to the
bottom of the next heart.
09. Lastly, attach your
clasp to each end (using
your jump ring if copper
kit) and tie your ribbon in
a bow wherever you like
E A R R I N G S
01. Cut a piece of craft
wire 6inches long then
use something round that
measures ½ inch wide to
wind wire around in the
same way you did to make
your heart for your bracelet,
ut on a slightly larger scale.
02. When you have your
basic heart shape, again
cut a piece of wire roughly
1 and ½ inches long then
make a coil on one end
and make a right angle.
03. Thread the coil over
both of the legs and trim
both legs to approx 4cm
longer than the heart itself.

Tips & AdviceTry and bend your wire
as smoothly as possible
because once you’ve put
any kind of kink into craft
wire it is quite difficult to
get it out again.
Jewellery Making Project
04. Wind the excess
wire using your chain
nose pliers scrolling into
the centre of the heart
05. Then with your round
nose pliers make a loop
at the top of your heart
to attach your ear wire to.
6Lastly attach your ear
wire and tie a piece
of ribbon around each
base of your ear wires.
Your bracelet and earrings
are now complete and
ready to wear, well done!

Czech Glass Spike Beads
Spikes; no longer reserved for punks and
rockers...these vicious little beauties have
officially gone mainstream!
Last year saw the fashion world go spike
crazy; but here we are, almost half way
through 2013 and they show no evidence of
from 8p eachgiving up. Never one to shy away from
trends, we now stock a beautiful range of
Czech Glass Spikes.
To showcase the range we have combined
them with two other timeless favourites;
the Kumihimo braid and 4mm Swarovski
Bicones. We think they look spike-tastic
as a woven bracelet and would look
‘rock n roll’ cool as a necklace too.
How have you used yours??

its portable, too, and will fit inside your
handbag allowing you to work on the go!
This braiding plate comes in Beadsmith
packaging and includes Beadsmith
illustrated instructions, tips and a project
idea!

Rattail is a very appealing material to use when creating jewellery. There are some beautiful colours that
are available to be used including
turquoise, plum, coffee, royal blue and
more. These striking colours work well
with beads and add to the overall look
of your creation. Choose 1, 2 or 3mm in
thickness so you get the style you want.
They are very versatile and allow you to
create special pieces of jewellery such as
friendship bracelets. If you fancy using them
in a more craft based way you could try your
hand at Chinese knot work or Macrame.

Who loves Kumihimo? We sure
do. This playful little disk took
last year’s beading community
by storm and its popularity
just keeps on growing.
But what’s the difference I hear you cry!
The plate is capable of
producing a multitude
of braid designs. In my
opinion, the results do
have a more masculine feel
which makes it the perfect
companion when braiding
men’s jewellery, friendship
bracelets, keys rings and such.
There is definitely less
literature devoted to the
plate, but for anyone wishing
to try I would recommend
the book ‘Beautiful Braiding
Made Easy’ by Helen Deighan
as a fantastic starting point.
Helens book walks you
through the history of braiding
and introduces you to an array
of braiding patterns for both
the round and square disk.
Her numbered instructions
make it a perfect book
for beginners, but even as
an experienced braider,
I found her projects to
be both fun and original.
There is a slight hiccup with
this book. The braiding disk
Helen uses is larger and
therefore has
more numbers.
Her layout didn’t
match the layout
on my board but
to rectify this
problem; I simply
turned my disk over
I’m sure the majority of you
reading this article have
explored the possibilities
of the cuddly little disk.
But how many of you
have taken the time to
get to know it quieter,
somewhat squarer brother;
the Kumihimo Plate?
to the blank underside
and wrote out new
numbers which matched
the layout of her board.
Do not let this put you off,
the book is a must have
for wannabe braiders and
weaving wonders alike.
