Choose Database from Drop-down lists or from List with descriptions.
From within University, select either Intranet or
Athens/Silverplatter Arc2. Externally select
Athens/Silverplatter Arc2.

Tick boxes next to
required Databases and
click on Start searching
Or click on + sign next to Database to list years
covered, tick box next to required years, then click on
Start searching. N.B. Clicking on ‘i’ will
display information about the Database
If unsure which Database to use, select
Suggest databases. Type in search term,
then click on Suggest databases again.
Databases will be ranked according to
number of hits.
Type in search terms. If searching for a phrase, enclose phrase in inverted commas to ensure words
searched as a phrase.
Then click on Search
Use Help screen and Dropdown “How do I…” menu for advice in formulating search
Database guide gives more information about the database and lists the fields
Index will show terms used in
indexing articles and can be used to check search
terms.
Thesaurus, if available, cross-
references to preferred indexing terms.
N.B. Thesaurus not available for all
databases
Terms can be linked using And, Or or Not (known as Boolean search operators)
And searches for 2 or more terms
together
Or searches for one term or another
Not excludes entries containing term
following
Wildcard or Truncation characters can be used to extend the search.
The Wildcard character (?) substitutes for one character or for none
eg behavio?r finds behaviour or behavior
Truncation (*) substitutes for zero or more characters, eg
environment* finds environment, environmental
etc.
Search history displays previous searches
These can be combined with new terms in subsequent searches. Precede search
number with # in Search box
Or tick boxes then click on Combine and search using and, or
Search results display on lower half of screen in
batches of 10

N.B. Some Complete records include very long abstracts: check before printing. Short record
includes all details necessary to find item
If Printing, do NOT Clear marked records until
printout produced and checked
Whether Printing, Saving to disc, or Emailing, fields for inclusion can be selected
If Emailing, remember to insert email address
