The considerable increase in environmental pol-
lution due to combustion processes has induced
many countries to introduce strict standards for
the quality of exhaust gases. Particulates and
exhaust gases cannot only damage the environ-
ment but also the human body.
Very toxic exhaust gas components, such as ni-
trogen oxides, carbon monoxides and unburned
hydrocarbons are produced during the combu-
stion of fossil fuels. In addition to the gaseous
pollutants, diesel engines emit particulates, i.e.
soot with attached carbons.
It is our declared aim to help you reduce your par-
ticulate and exhaust gas emissions – worldwide!
Hug Engineering AGHug Engineering AG, founded in 1983, is the leading
manufacturer of exhaust gas purification systems for
various types and sizes of engines used in stationary
plants such as electric and thermal power stations as
well as for mobile installation in transport vehicles,
trains, ships and yachts.
From A to Z, everything from one supplier
The main activities of Hug Engineering AG are the
planning, design, production and sale of exhaust gas
purification systems and are carried out indepen-
dently within the company.
The wide range of in-house manufactured products
such as catalytic converters, diesel particulate filters,
control systems and reactors make Hug Engineering
AG the only supplier who can provide the main com-
ponents of a project without having to use external
suppliers.
Internationally recognised
In addition to the many satisfied customers, various
international certifications such as VERT, EN 15085,
DIN ISO 9001, and Lloyd’s verify the quality and func-
tionality of the systems produced.
The VERT certificate is an internationally recognised
attestation of the efficiency of the filtration of ultra-
fine particles.
The Lloyd’s certification confirms the safety of our
filters for marine applications.
EN 15085 is a high welding standard particularly
used in the railway sector.
All of our processes are certified to DIN ISO 9001
standard.
International sales
An extensive distribution network allows us to be
present in the main international markets and the-
refore guarantees support in sales and service of the
products – worldwide.

TechnologiesWe have many years of experience in manufacturing
diesel particulate filters and catalytic converters and
our work is based on the following methods:
• diesel particulate filters with catalytic soot
combustion
• SCR – selective catalytic NOx reduction
• catalytic oxidation of HC and CO
With the SCR technology using urea for diesel en-
gines and with catalytic particle filter technology, we
are proud to be one of the world‘s pioneering com-
panies.
Selective catalytic NOx reduction
Nitrogen oxides (NOx) may lead to paralysis of the
central nervous system or even pulmonary oedema.
They are also responsible for creating smog and are
a forerunner substance for ozone.
The nitrogen oxides NO and NO2 are neutralised by
a selective catalytic reduction (SCR) process. This re-
action is possible thanks to the residual oxygen con-
tained in the exhaust gases.
The exhaust gas mixed with a reduction reagent (ge-
nerally urea solution), flows through the honeycom-
bed catalysers. The nitrogen oxides (NOx) react on
the active surface of the catalytic converter together
with the reactant and reduce NO and NO2 to water
and nitrogen.
NOx reduction rate can be achieved to up to 99%.
Catalytic oxidation of hydrocarbons and car-
bon monoxide
Carbon monoxide is a colourless and odourless gas,
which has a considerably higher affinity to blood
haemoglobin than oxygen. Consequently, this leads
to poisoning of the body due to lack of oxygen.
The reduction of carbon monoxide and unburned
hydrocarbons is achieved by installing an oxidation
stage after the SCR reduction.
The harmful gases come into contact with the active
surface of a honeycombed ceramic catalyser, which
is coated with precious metals. The oxidation takes
place on the active surface.
Oxidation rate of HC and CO can be achieved to up
to 99 %.
The diesel particulate filter (DPF)
During combustion in a diesel engine, there is a lack
of oxygen which leads to the formation of soot parti-
cles of various sizes, which can be extremely fine.
The average diameter of a diesel particulate is about
80 nanometre. The smaller the ultra-fine particles,
the more hazardous they are. Diesel particles are
highly carcinogenic and contribute considerably to
global warming.
Our diesel particulate filters are based on a ceramic
honeycomb structure made of silicon carbide (SiC),
which allows the exhaust gas to flow through the
porous honeycomb walls. During this process parti-
cles of all sizes are deposited on the filter substrate
and are, thanks to the catalytic coating, converted to
CO2 and water vapour.
In order to comply with different layouts of diesel
particulate filter systems, a range of filter variations
in geometry and structure are used.
Hug Engineering diesel particulate filters remove
more than 99% of soot and particles in the range of
20-300 nanometre.

Research & developmentStarting with a revolutionary idea, a team of experts
of committed engineers and technicians develop new
products for the reduction of emissions in exhaust
gases. Permanent innovation is the central focus and
is the key to the development of the company‘s own
products, processes and technologies. Therefore,
new systems are thoroughly tested. Possible defects
are detected in pre-simulations so that they can be
eliminated before the production phase begins.
Our own laboratories with state-of the-art equip-
ment allow test cycles to be carried out with both,
real engine exhaust gases and with synthetic gases.
Planning
Our specialists with many years of experience will
propose solutions based on your requirements.
Design and productionDesign and production of the filters, catalytic con-
verters and housings takes place in our company.
The respective control systems are also developed,
manufactured and assembled in the company‘s own
factory. This ensures an integrated, tailored produc-
tion.
Design
Thanks to the latest IT technology, the designers are
able to integrate the customer‘s specifications easily
and economically into the production process.
Ceramics and catalytics
Hug Engineering manufacturers its own honeycomb
in various structures and sizes.
New ceramic materials and catalyser coatings are de-
veloped in the chemical laboratories of the company.
After a validation phase, they go into industrial pro-
duction. Small batches are also possible in order to
meet special customer requirements.
Control system
The wiring diagrams and the programme documen-
tations are produced in the electrical engineering de-
partment of Hug Engineering AG. Before the complete
system is delivered to the customer, it is inspected
with the aid of process simulators.
Reactors and assembly of the catalysts
The catalyser modules and filter elements are instal-
led in the reaction chamber. Easy and speedy replace-
ment of the elements is possible thanks to access
doors in the reactor. The compact reactor is made of
stainless steel and the design takes account of the
stress which may occasionally occur due to pulsation
of the exhaust gas pressure.
Service and spare partsFor Hug Engineering, customer service means fast
delivery of high quality, original spare parts. Our
experienced team of specialists efficiently answers
your questions on site or by phone. A comprehensive
stock of spare parts is available, both at headquar-
ters in Switzerland and at branch offices.
