Oil Resisting Messages

How can we demonstrate resistance?
1. Experiment with watercolor resist by creating a series of patterns with light colored oil pastels. Then, paint over the pastels with the watercolors. What happens to the watercolor? Why does water resist the oil? Write down your observations. 2. Explore the term "resist". What are some ways you resist something or can be resistant? Find some text examples and explore their context. 3. List some of your favorite personality traits about yourself and some that you don't like. What are ways that you resist both sets of traits? 4. Write yourself a positive message about your personal traits using white oil pastel on the paper. Color over it with watercolor to reveal the message. Choose colors to reflect the message.

Watercolor Stories

1. Using 1 piece of watercolor paper, create 5 sections using masking tape. Experiment with using the watercolors in these 5 techniques: dry dots, plastic wrap, toothbrush, gradient and flat wash. Write down a few descriptive words for each technique. 2. Using a text selection of your choice, explore the elements of a plot and story arc. Then, have students select a few descriptive words for each section. 3. Create a painting that tells a story through textures, creating a clear story arc/plot. Add the text as an accompanying artist statement. Extension: Create a piece of visual poetry using the 5 layered techniques and then write a haiku that describes each texture.

Checklist for absorption test and collage
1. Create a texture board. On a piece of cardboard, attach a piece of each: watercolor paper, computer paper, paper towel, facial tissue. 2. Add watercolors to each of the textures on the board. Record the rate of absorption for each color added. Variables can be added, including adding more or less water to the watercolors. 3. Explore how some artists use mixed media to create collages. Review several collages as examples. 4. Create a texture-based collage using a selection of materials. Use the rates of absorption to make a decision on which textures to include in the collage.

1. Explore the work of artist Jill Pelto https://www.pri.org/stories/2016-03-09/watercolor-nah-look-closer-its-climate-change-graph Discuss how she uses data to create visual art. 2. Study the use of analogous and complementary colors in Pelto's work, as well as other visual graph representations. Which kinds of colors would you use and why? 3. Students can select a data set on a current topic (ie: climate change) and create a sketch overtop of the data set on watercolor paper that would turn the data into a piece of artwork. 4. Using either analogous or complementary colors, add watercolor to the work to enhance the artwork and to best demonstrate their interpretation of the data.

How do artists use optical illusions?

1. Review the research on the Watercolor Illusion here: http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0042698901001055 2. Experiment by creating several different lines in a dark color and then flanking it with a slightly darker color on a white piece of paper. Does it make it look like the inside between the lines makes a different color? Use different lines, spaces and background colors to vary the experiment. 3. Explore a variety of old maps and cartography that used purple and orange to delineate geographical areas. Create your own map using this technique.
