Swamp and spring water can be made safe for domestic use through filtration and chlorination.

Hypothesis

According to an article in Wikipedia

about water supply and sanitation in Uganda, by 2010, 38% of the population in Uganda had no access to an improved water source. People rely on unsafe sources such as rivers, lakes an unprotected wells.

Introduction

To design a water treatment system. To learn how to carry out scientific research. To learn how to collect, analyze and interpret

data. To learn how to work in a group environment.

Objective

Identification of water sources. Collection of water samples. Filtration using gravel method to remove big

particles. Precipitation using Aluminium sulphate to

remove tinny particles. Filtration using gravel method to remove the

precipitate. Chlorination to kill the germs. Neutralisation using Sodium carbonate

Spring water - Unfiltered: Had E. coli growth. Swamp water- Unfiltered: Had E. coli growth

Spring water -Filtered: No growth. Swamp water- Filtered: No growth.

Results

The unfiltered water from both the

spring and swamp was unsafe especially for drinking as it contained coliforms and large particles.

After filtration and chlorination, both spring and swamp water was clear and did not contain coliforms.

Discussion

We conclude that this method was

effective in cleaning swamp and spring water and could be used for water treatment for domestic use.
