Water Pressure
Water PressureAlso called hydrostatic
pressure.
Defined as the pressure exerted by a static fluid dependent on the depth of the fluid, the density of the fluid, and the acceleration of gravity.
Does not depend on the total mass, surface area, or shape of the liquid.
What do we use it for?Fire hoses
Showers
Hydraulic pumps
Pressure washer
Wells
Dams
EquationP = d * h * g
Pressure is equal to the density of the liquid, times the height of the column, times the acceleration due to gravity.
Which of the following statements is correct?A. The water exerts the greatest pressure on the base of vessel
1.B. The water exerts the greatest pressure on the base of vesselC. The water exerts the same force on the base of each vessel.D. The water exerts the same pressure on the base of each vessel.
PressureLiquid has a weight.
Pushes on all walls of a container with equal pressure in all directions.
Pushes on an object immersed in it.
Independent of direction, scalar quantity
Pascal’s PrincipleAny external pressure applied to a fluid is
transmitted undiminished throughout the liquid and onto the walls of the containing vessel.
