INSTINCT THEORY

Natural tendencies that determine behavior

Occur in all species

More popular in the 1900’s than present day

DRIVE REDUCTION THEORY

Need Drive

Need: biological or psychological requirement of an organism

Drive: state of tension caused from a NEED that motivates toward a goal

Event (food deprivation) Drive (hunger) Action (eating) Result (drive reduction)

DRIVE REDUCTION THEORY

Attempt to maintain homeostasis

Correct imbalances from normal state

Psychologist- Clark Hull

All motives are from the basic biological needs

INCENTIVE THEORY

Focus on the role of environment

Incentive - object we seek or result attempting to achieve

IE- Reinforcers, goals, rewards

Gain positive incentives, avoid negative incentives

COGNITIVE THEORY

Extrinsic motivation- reduce biological needs or obtain incentives

Intrinsic motivation- activities are personally rewarding, fulfill our beliefs or expectations

Over justification- giving more extrinsic motivation that necessary, intrinsic motivation declines
