Regulating the Cell Cycle and Cancer

Cells have a system of controls, much like how traffic lights control the flow of traffic.

The cell cycle has key checkpoints or inspection points. At these checkpoints the cell might receive signals to move on to the next phase (greenlight) or a signal that delays the cell so that it can complete the current stage (yellow/red light). These checkpoints are controlled by PROTEINS.

Scientists have discovered a family of closely related proteins, known as cyclins, that are involved in cell cycle regulation. Cyclins regulate the timing of the cell cycle in eukaryotic cells.

When the regulation of cell growth and division is lost-CANCER-or the uncontrolled growth of cells-may result

Cancer cells do not respond to the signals that regulate the growth of most cells. As a result, they divide uncontrollably and form masses of cells called tumors that can damage surrounding tissues

Cancer cells may break loose from tumors and spread throughout the body, disrupting normal activities and causing serious medical problems or even death.

Cancer has many causes including smoking tobacco, radiation exposure, pollution, viral infections, and others. However, all cancers have one thing in common: the control over the cell cycle has broken down.

2000 statistics

Types of cancer: (these are just some common types-there are many more!)1. Breast cancer 2. Lung cancer3. Bladder cancer 4. Brain cancer5. Ovarian cancer 6. Leukemia (cancer of the blood)7. Prostate cancer 8. Stomach cancer

Treatment for cancer:1. Surgery-attempts to remove the tumor2. Radiation therapy-uses radiation to damage and kill cancer cells

3. Chemotherapy-drugs that interfere with cell division and target rapidly dividing cells-can harm healthy tissues

4. Immunotherapy-designed to help the body’s own immune system fight the tumor

The treatment depends on the location of the tumor and the stage of the cancer. The goal of treatment is the removal of the cancer without damaging the rest of the body.
